I have a scotts (made by John Deere) model 2554
25 hp kohler with 54" deck. Replaced starter & mower cutting & running fine. Then while cutting tall grass, mower shut down, clogged. I pushed in the PTO switch & restarted mower, pulled up deck, pushed PTO back in & engine quit again. Now won't start, or click. It acts like blades are engaged even though i removed deck & unclogged grass underneath. Battery is ok. When ignition key is turned the only the light comes on but doesn't click or anything. Please advise.

It sounds like you are missing the throttle return springs that returns the throttle actuator back to closed. The draft of the engine will open the butterfly valve.

I don't think it will easily interchange. Of course you can always adapt anything, however don't think this is a good idea. Not with a 54 inch cut. Kohlers are usually easy to repair and overhaul. I would try to replace with same engine.
