I was listening to it last night and wrapped the headphones and set it on my bedside table to go to sleep. When I woke up this morning, I was listening to it while doing chores and it died suddenly in the middle of a song. I plugged it in, and nothing happened. I'd read somewhere that you should leave it be for a while and then reset it, so I did that (it was unlocked, I checked) and nothing happened. Tried plugging it in to different computers, nothing. I just got it, but it's second hand--no warranty.

Turn it on: if it will stay powered up, hold down on the pad, and hold the back button at the same time: This will turn the device off, thus possibly fixing the problem. (for the record, holding up on the pad while pressing back will reboot the device, but I find this sometimes does not want to take, like in the situation you are having)
I may also suggest plugging it into any give USB port, letting it try to charge again, then, when you unplug it, do the reboot or turn off commands as described above.
Hope that this helps: I would think the system is off, since you say it
"turned off" on you, and now when you start it up you get the "i need a
charge" battery, but knowing how my 80 gig acts sometimes, it may THINK
it is shutting of when it is not.

SOURCE: ZUNE NOT WORKING! ONLY BLACK SCREEN! WONT CHARGE!
Listen everyone this is what happened to me and what I did. Let the battery drain completely (unplugged from computer). It usually takes 5 to 6 hours to drain completely.
Then plug back in and hold the back and down button at the same time. Zune should resume functioning afterwards. All that is needed is a recharge.

Press up and the back button at the same time for about ten seconds. This should reset your zune.
