The machine is 12 years old and still sews quite well. I am really hoping that I can clear this up myself as I am retired and can't afford to take it into the shop.
If your machine has a free motion knob there should be a small screw visible. This is the knob stop screw, undo this and the knob can be fully unscrewed and then the wheel can be slid off

When it feels like the needle is jammed, open the bobbin cover and release the two black retaining levers, one on either side of the bobbin case. The hook cover that is visible will be released. If the machine turns by hand smoothly, you may have a piece of the broken needle, or just a piece of thread stuck behind the hook or hook cover causing the bind. This problem will sometime make you swear that the needle is stuck in something because it will usually bind while the needle is down in the fabric.

frustrating huh? it happens! even to us that have been sewing for 50+ years, but the solution is very simple. Top thread tension is the culprit. pull the spool all the way off and rethread the top, follow the threading path precisely and make sure the thread goes down into the tension discs.
one more thing - when that happens often times the piece has to be removed from the machine by cutting those annoying loops on the bottom. if this is the case, make sure you have removed all the thread clippings from in and around the bobbin case. sometimes one little piece of thread will make you want to use swear words.

After all this, it's OK to tighten your tension up on top a little when free motioning and getting eyelashes/spider webs on bottom. around 6 should do it though.

you might check your needle to see if it's bent
try rethreading the machine, some machines do that when the top thread comes off the thread take up lever
make sure the bobbin is wound correctly & inserted in bobbin case correctly
also make sure the bobbin is not warped

You need to give it a helping hand over the thick seams. There is a gadget called a jean-a-ma-jig which could help.
Or sew up to the seam, leave the needle in the thread, lift the pressure foot, then insert a thick piece of card from behind to make the foot level with the seam, lower the pressure foot then sew.
The idea is to make a level surface instead of a bump to sew over. Improvise any way you can.
