How do I start to move pictures and other files to the device?

It is the Maxtor 3200. I just opened it and am using a desktop Windows Vista. I just haven't figured out how to do it.

SOURCE: Drive won't start

Hi I understand your problem, You said that you checked in device manger,it didn't started. Did you checked whether is it detected BIOS. If its not try connecting the IDE cable for the CD Drive,if you found the drive detected in My Computer. Then there is no issues with the Hard Drive, something needs to be checked in Motherboard port. You can contact your computer manufacture to get replacement of motherboard...

SOURCE: How Do You Open a Maxtor 3200 500 gb case?

How to open the enclosure You will need a long flat piece of metal.

On the sides of the enclosure are small slits.

If you look in the slits diagonally you will see a metal tab.

Slide the metal tabs about 1/4" towards the ends of the case. (there are 4 slides one on each corner)

The case will now open freely.

SOURCE: maxtor 3200 160gb usb hard drive not in my computer

Hello kc9iid.

"Any suggestions?" ... Yes. Here's a quick few:

If it's showing in your WinXP's "Device Manager", try reinitializing it.

1. Select the device (maxtor 3200 160gb), then right-click > "Uninstall" it.
2. Reboot (instead of rebooting, you may also simply do a menubar > "Actions" > "Scan for hardware changes". However, if you haven't already rebooted since problem was recognized, this is a good time to do it now. If left un-done, you'd be amazed how often that one action alone will work wonders).

If that brings no joy, see if the drive is reflected in your "Disk Management" console [Start > Run... > type "diskmgmt.msc" (without quotes), then "OK"].

If it's not there, your registry is probably configured to "hide" (not display) the specific drive letter assigned to this drive. You can both check and correct this by getting "TweakUI". Download it here http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/System-Tweak/TweakUI.shtml. After it downloads, launch it, then ensure the subject drive letter is checked ON [TweakUI > left colunm "My Computers" > "Drives"].

Good luck, and post back with a status report and/or any further questions.

Hey guys I had the same problem... All the drivers for the device are inside the harddrive. Maxtor doesn't have any because you don't need any. What they've neglected to let any of us know is the power supply provided with the unit isn't powerful enough to run it. Replace the original power supply with another one and this will solve the problem. I replaced mine with an old laptops power supply, the fit was alittle tight but believe me it works.

Maxtor Personal Storage 3200, after years of use my Vista machine now tells me that the USB Device isnt recognised.

However last month I found that the Maxtor is no longer recognisable to my machine. Reading through related postings on other sites it appears that Vista updates from Microsoft may be the reason why this functionality has suddenly ceased. I presume the security updates in particular may have meant that the Maxtor 3200 is also considered a potential threat. The question is who will take responsibility for resolving this issue of Maxtor 3200 users no longer being able to access their back up files via their Vista based machines. Personally I believe the onus is with Microsoft

hope this helps

I can not see my usb maxtor 3200 hard drive in my

this could idicate a low power supply for the device. some computer do have front usb ports, the truth about this front port is that they lack the power to supply some of this devices (being 200GB). If you are connecting it to the front usb then try using the main one behind the pc.
also note that usb polling which acts by reducing power consumed by the device may also be a cause(that is if you are using a modified version of windows other than that from microsoft since the modifier can alter that as well). Also try using it on a friends pc to see the outcome.
do let me know of the out come.
good luck

Maxtor manufacturer says that this drive is not ready for windows 7 and no driver had been issued. you will have to connect it to another computer to recover the data, or to use another computer in your network to access it and share the resource with your pc with windows 7

Worked yesterday / not working today

Someone else figured this out, but I've seen a lot of people with the same problem. Hopefully this will help you with yours. This is for WinXP and Windows Vista. It worked great for me.

*** THIS WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY ***

1 - Disconnect the HD from USB and power supply.
2 - There are 2 screws at the back. Unscrew and open the box. (The plastic is kinda hard to open be careful)
3 - Now you have a metal box in your hands. Unscrew and open it.
4 - Now you will see a HD and a controller board. There are 3 screws that holds the controller board. Take them out.
5 - Now slide out the hard drive and controller board out gently.
6 - Unplug the controller board (power socket and IDE socket)from the Hard disk.
7 - Look at the back you will see jumper settings. (Mine was set on Cable Select.)
8 - Take the jumper out and plug it to Master ON position. now put it all back together.

Corrupted file message.can't open 3200

Had something like the same. The contents of an entire folder dissappeared.

I made a backup of all data I needed from the disk, then re-partitioned and re-formatted it. Now it seems to be ok again, but I lost my trust, so it will be a nice 500GB temporary folder for my PC.

from a command line, chkdsk was not able to run. Only at next boot. It started cycling with the same message all the time. Unfortunately I didn't copy the message

The USB drive is not the C: drive. Open the windows file manager and you should be able to find it. Right click the Start button and open Explorer.

According to this, the device only supports Windows 2000, XP Pro and XP Home (and presumably, Vista as well).
