I recentley bought a Craftsman 4.0 HP mower at a yard sale, tested it before taking home and it fired right up. It did run a little rough so I replaced the air filter & spark-plug. Once again it fired right up and cut my lawn beutifully. The other day I went to mow the lawn and now it starts but dies after a couple of seconds. I've checked hose connections as well as the spark-plug connection. I'm stumped

You need to disassemble the carburetor and spray the with carb. cleaner. Make sure all small debris is out. Ckeck any gaskets for signs of ware. If they look bad, replace them; your carb. could be sucking air if so. Also check the fuel filter to see if gas is flowing through it.

It would be helpful to know which brand of engine you have, but here goes - if it is a tecumseh, remove the little brass "nut" that holds the float bowl on, it will have a hole by the hex part, a hole from the top going straight through, and a tiny, tiny hole at the top edge of the threads, clean these out with a small piece of wire brush - if briggs with independent carb, remove the "nut" and clean the two holes - if briggs with carb mounted to gas tank, remove the carb/tank assembly, remove carb, replace the diaphragm

When you cleaned the carb did you clean out the metering jet with a needle and blow out. It only takes a tiny spec of dirt to raise hell with these small carbs.

Engine starts and runs okay until I engage blade

I had the same problem on a 21HP, you are running on one cylinder. Take off the valve cover and most likely you will have a/some bent valve push rod(s) which is common on B&S V2 engines. They are cheap to buy but kind of tricky to install and properly adjust.

The engine start running rough when pto in engaged.

Are you sure you engine RPM's are high enough? If so adjust you carbs.high speed screw with the throttle in the wide open position.

Will not start

Many times the the unit will have a safety switch under the seat. The switch is easily bypassed for testing purposes only. When this does or does not fix the problem, return the connections to normal ops. If you have checked for spark and have good spark you can now take the air filter off and place a shop rag over the intake of the carb to increase suction to the fuel supply while attempting to start the engine at the same time.. I always spray some staring fluid to see if the spark and combustion funtions are operating correctly. best of luck Russ
