Drum won't turn

This inglis gas dryer is from 1993 (Model #IA72100)... I hope to repair this myself. No problem with coil valve or heating. All vents and areas internally are lint free. A part of a jacket caught in the drum's crease and pulled out the felt ring around the dryer. I replaced it. But then the dryer had developed a grinding noise under heavier loads such as jeans or towels. I continued to use the dryer for months with regular weighted loads. Now I hear a low humming noise when pressing the start button, (like a distant jet engine warming up) the drum begins to turn but shuts off in 1-3 turns, it will start again but only if start button is held down. Drum is stiff and hard to turn by hand. The belt seems fine? What other steps could I make to elimate the problem? I hold a grudge againgst the last serviceman that charged me full price after I assisted him thoughout the removal and return of the drum... and provided him with 3 much needed glasses of icewater on a hot summer's day. Perhaps it was the toy rubber garter snake that startled him out of the basement that detered him from giving me a fair price!!! I'd like to tackle the current problems on my own if I can get a few suggestions...

Is it possible to check the bearing or oil the centre of rotation?

Testimonial: "I've oiled the shaft to the drive motor which moves more freely now but the slow, load grinding noise is worse... it sounds like it's coming from the blower wheel area but everything seeems to be clear there? Perhaps it's the best place to start replacing parts!"

I guess you may check whether the blower wheel is still rigid (not deformed) and if it is touching anything during rotation. Also, check if the bolt/screw that keep the drum to the shaft is secure.

Thanks for all your help... it is appreciated. I changed the rear drum rollers and idler pulley. Although the belt showed no signs of wear, I change it too. Rotation has improved and there's no more grinding. So with my handy-gal work complete, it's back to sporting an apron, to tackle the heaping pile of laundry that's beginning to look like a monster lurking in the dark corner of the basement! Haha... Thanks again!

I've spoken too soon... buzzing of the start button has returned, although there is no more grinding except as the drum first starts, on my second load the dryer shut off early and I could smell hot wires... slightly frustrating but I'll order a new motor and keep my fingers crossed.

Sounds like what you said. Time for a motor. The motor has an internal overload and will shut the machine off if the motor runs hot.

Hello,
Your dryer is heated by gas and what is happening is,when the coils that open the gas valve work when they are cool but once the dryer is running and the gas valve coils get warm they wont work, this is pretty typical of a bad gas valve coil.Replacing the coils will fix that.To replace the gas valve coils,UNPLUG THE DRYER, use a putty knife and place in the seam between the main front panel and the small lower front panel AT the corners and depress the clip that holds small panel to main panel. On the right side of the base frame behind the small panel is the burner asm. the coils are held to the gas valve by a bracket remove that bracket and replace the coils, they are black round shaped and one has 2 wires and one has 3 wires the plugs pull off and can be push onto the new coils with just a small amount of pressure.
The part # for the coils is 279834 They can be purchased at your local appliance parts store or online at;

I hope i have helped you to be able to repair your dryer,

Hello,

The gas coils have failed. These are the two round devices on the gas valve. You would need to open the dryer to access and replace the gas valves. Every make and model is different.

With the model number I would be able to better assist you.

Gas drier Whirlpool LGR5634LQ0 drum turns, no heat. Turn off and restart, heats for a while then no heat for drying. Lint is clear, etc... Gas valve is in on position. Not sure what to do next. Check...

most gas dryers will have a problem with the 2 coils on top of the valve.
when these coils are weak or going bad, it will heat for a short while then no heat at all.
if you let the unit set for an hour or 2, it will heat again for a short peroid.
the coils are easy to replace, but do get both of them.

Our gas dryer takes a long time to begin heating then it stops heating midway through the cycle. The drum continues to turn. We have had a slight smell of gas.

It sounds like the safty coils on top of the gas valve are not working properly. As the dryer heats up the coils expand creating an open curcuit in the coil. There is a repair kit to replace the coils. This should be done by a licenced gas fitter.
