in reg to mcculloch 5700 generator smoking after about 5 minutes- the generator shorted out and now the generator isn't functional. We certainly can't recommend buying a mcculloch generator after this experience. It had only been ran 1 time, then stored for the winter.got it out during power outage and it started ok, but then it stated smoking and shut down.

Was it just the paint and oil burning off the muffler? or did it blow smoke out of the muffler like it was sucking oil?
is it still functional? does it still run?

Generator will crank but will not start

First check spark while cranking over( pull the plug wire hold by insulator about a 1/4 inch away from any ground, you should see a strong spark. then check to be sure the fuel is pumping from yhe carb., if no fuel try a short squirt into the carb intake. should fire up if you had spark. Its generally a good idea to put in a new plug and be sure to check the gap.

My 5700 runs about 5 min. then back fire out the carb and then wont start for about 10 min. then it starts and run about 5 min. and stop agin i clean the carb check the valves

I would first said that your intake valve is not sealing like it should (burned, warped, etc). But, you have already checked that.

The other reason for a backfire is timing. Could your magneto or keyway be heating up and moving throwing off the timing? And speaking of keyways, how does the woodruff key look? Is it chewed up or distorted?

McCulloch 5700, 11 HP Starts easy with 2 pulls and begins running fine. Then it start dying and back fires, revs up and down, back fires. Then will run normal for a few minutes and will start revving up...

Sounds like you may have a wire shorting out. Check all ign wires and make sure one hasnt rubbed through. Maybe take off your front cover and make sure something isnt shorting out your coil contacts. Hope this helps

Won't start.

Hi raw 28:

ther gas that was in the carb probably evaporated. you might tryt a little spray starter fluid in the spark plug hole or in the air intake of the carb, This might just get it running long enough to draw gas into the carb and get it self sustaining,

Good luck Loringh
