Hi there,
Windows Media Player can actually rip songs directly from music cds for you and then you just copy paste them in your MP3s memory. If not, Try to look for NeoAudio version 9.9.9 which is a free music cd ripping software.

I set up my RX-V365 recently, and the center speaker doesnt seem to work. i use it for listening to music, the sound should come out right?

Sound from a speaker, nah, that's an optional feature (kidding).

If you dig into the manual annd go through the setup using the test tones you can prove/disprove the viability of all the speakers and channels. THAT is required before we try to listen to 'music' (assumed 2-channel) on multiple speakers.
Sound Field programs (page 25) can be applied to just about any source. Experiment, even within a given recording. You'll be amazed how different digital processes can make even familiar recordings new and more interesting. I've discovered instruments and sounds in old recording I never noticed before.

Line in audio from external source i.e. blu ray, or Mac always using xlr in's, records over modulated. Even when using comp or limit general setting. Do I need to use a pad to knock the signal down?

Yes, you need to pad it down. This recorder is likely to accept around a -50 Db and the other sources you mentioned are probably +4 Db. Using a limiter and compressors will result in distortion as your inputs exceed the range those can handle. I would use about a 40 Db pad trial to start. That is a voltage ratio of 1:100. Make yourself a voltage divider with say a 100K and a 1K putting the inout across the series combination and taking the out to the recorder across the 1K.

How to record music on ThinkPad!! Thanks

1) Turn on your mic 2) Start windows sound recorder 3) Start recording 4) Jam out on your instrument(s) 5) Stop recording 6) ... 7) Profit
In truth, this is a terrible device to record music on. You should look into getting a mixer (with as many tracks as you need) and a dedicated computer with a high quality sound card (M-Audio) is a good brand.
If you're thinking about making electronic music, look into FL Studio. http://flstudio.image-line.com/
More details would allow me to answer with more precision.

1) how to make my amp record....because its not working when i try... 2) do i have to a cord in line 1 and 2??? 3) do i have to plug in the cord in :.....line in or line out??????

You will use microphone with balanced XLR connector into the XLR mic input. Note, the ALpha does NOT have phantom power so you cannot use condenser mics.

A guitar can be plugged into the hi-z instrument 1/4 inch jack on the left front of the unit.

To use the line 1/4 inch inputs you will use BALANCED TRS 1/4 inch cables from your source.for these channels. The level on these needs to be line level.

The line outs are for sending audio out to an amp. There appears to be RCA outputs you can use as well.

I am not sure what you mean by making your "amp record"... An amp PLAYS the audio, usually into a speaker.

If you are trying to play a guitar through your amp AND record, then you will connect your guitar to the Alpha, the amp input will have a cable from say Line 1 OUTPUT and when recording wou will have the echo feature on so your guitar is passed through to the amp.

How can i have music in hold time ?

There are several ways to have music-on-hold for your telephone line(s). 1st you need to have a source of music such as a radio that has an output connection to feed the radio signal to the tele system, or a recorded music player that also has this output connection, or you can subscribe to Muzak (www.muzak.com) a company located in South Carolina that provides this type of service. 2nd, you need a telephone that has the input connection to allow this music source to be connected to the tele system, or you can buy a music-on-hold adapter that will feed your music source into the tele system regardless of the type of phone you have (as long as the phone has "on hold button", or if you choose Muzak, they will provide this aparatus adapter to you. Check the manual that comes with your phone to see if it has this music input feature; I'm not 100% sure of your model without further research, but I feel that the phone most likely does not have this feature. An adapter unit can be found at Radio Shack, or some AT&T telephone stores or on the internet. Good luck, Macgivor.

Records on right channel only so only get music from right speake

If you are recording from an outside source check the connections are good. If it does it from both IE dubbing and external it is possibly that a wire has detached from the head of the record head. The other likely source is the record amp inside the deck. Trace the leads from the Tape head (recording one) and see if you can locate a switch, these can get dirt on the contacts and cut out channels (clean with Servisol video 40). It could also be the electronics especially the amp chip!
If not then the head itself may have gone.

Sound card won't work with external input

Are you trying to record and listen at the same time? It doesn't usually work that way, the computer has to process and encode the audio signals before they can be listened to. Once you restore the computer, are you able to listen to the recording? If you have onboard sound, rather than a separate sound card, all the audio processing is done by your CPU. If you are trying to listen to the audio as it is being recorded, you are probably overloading the capabilities of the device and its shutting itself down. Try to record without listening. Also make sure you have the latest drivers. If it is onboard audio, check the manufacturer's website for updates. If you know that it is Realtek AC 97 (probably says so your manual), you can download new drivers from the Realtek website.
