Hello, if the drive is new it may just need to be formatted, if it's an existing drive it may have a failed partition.
If it's new, connect it to the computer, right-click on your My Computer or Computer icon and left-click manage. When the management console opens left-click Disk Management, then scroll through the right panel and find your 640GB drive. As long as it's there and unallocated you can right click on the unallocated space and select format. Follow the wizard using the default settings. When you're finished it should show up in My Computer.
If this is an existing drive and has failed, proceed to the management console and see if it shows up, if it does make note of all information show in the right panel and either way report back for further assistance by reply to this response.
Hope this helps FixYa,
Chris

The model your teacher had is a 2.5inch hard drive that is used with laptops and is small enough to be able to work just fine from the power it gets from the USB port. Your 1TB hard drive is most probably a 3.5inch desktop model, and these models us a lot more power, and they do need to be plugged in to a power source.

Go to Start, right-click on My Computer icon and select Manage
When you go to manage, select Disk Management.
Click on Disk Management and you will notice all the disks (HDDs and any removable devices on your right column.
Click on the Seagate 1tb HDD,
(1) Note the file system
(2) Note the Status of the drive
(3) Note Fault Tolerance
(4) Then Notice the HDD if it is Basic or Dynamic
If the HDD is Basic, right click on it and create a partition.
Then move some of the Data on to the new partition to free up the old partition. Restart the computer and abserve the results...
That usually happens when the Hard Disk driver is running out of space or you have less RAM..

Hi there. Here are some solutions you could try 1. Try connecting it with a different USB cable as the present one may be faulty. 2. If you can open the casing, do so to confirm if there is a loose connection. 3. You can try this great application tool from Seagate called Sea Tool. You will need to download and install on your computer. This tool examines you hard drive and lets you know if it is totally damaged. You can download it here. SEATOOL
