I got a Netgear WNCE2001 today. My router is a Verizon router. (The one with the WPS button on the front.) The security password is in WEP. When I try to connect it with WPS, the light on the WNCE2001 just keeps blinking green and yellow. When I push the WPS button on my router, it does nothing. When I try to hook it up with GUI, I get to the part where it says connecting to router, then it says can't connect at around 80%. Can you guys help me?

SOURCE: Can Not connect to NetGear MR814 v2 Router with Acer Extensa 4420

Here are some troubleshooting steps that I suggest you try:

1. Check physical connections.

a. Connect the modem to the Internet port of the router. The Internet “i” LED on the front of the router should light up.
b. Connect the computer to one of the four LAN ports (i.e port 1, 2, 3 or 4) on the back of the router. The corresponding port light where you connected the computer should be lit up.

2. Access the router's web-based utility.

a. Please open any web browser like Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.
b. Connect to the router by typing http://routerlogin.com/basicsetting.htm or http://192.168.1.1 in the address field and click Enter or Return key.
c. A window will prompt for a user name and password. By default, the user name is "admin" and the password is "password".

Note: If you were unable to access the router's web-based utility, you may reset the router to restore the settings to factory default.

To reset the router:

a. Please push the reset button at the back of the router and release after 30 seconds.
b. Unplug the power adapter for 10 seconds and then plug it back in.

3. Configure the router.

If your Internet Service Provider is using a cable connection, please follow the steps below:

a. Click on Basic Settings under Setup tab.
b. Select No for Does Your Internet Connection Require A Login?.
c. Scroll down on the center page and look for the Router MAC Address section. Set it to Use computer MAC address and click on the Apply button.

If your Internet Service Provider is using a DSL connection, please follow the steps below:

a. Click on Basic Settings.
b. Select Yes for Does Your Internet Connection Require A Login?.
c. Select Other on the Internet Service Provider drop down box.
d. Enter your ISP's username (username@ISPdomain) and password. Then, click on Apply.

4. Configure the wireless settings.

a. Click on the Wireless Settings under Setup.
b. Change the SSID to any unique name.
c. Scroll down, look for the Security Options settings and select WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy).
d. Set the Authentication type to "Automatic" and the Encryption Strength to "64bit".
e. Leave the Passphrase field blank, select Key 1 and enter a 10-digit number.

Note: The 10-digit number you typed in the key 1 will be the password or network key for the wireless connection.

f. Click Apply button to save the changes.
g. Go to Router Status under Maintenance tab and check if there is an IP address under Internet port. If it's 0.0.0.0, do a power cycle.

5. Power cycle.

a. Power off the modem, router and computers.
b. Turn on the power of the modem first and wait for it to initialize, the lights to stop blinking.
c. Power back the router and the computers. Check if it will be able to get online.

If you have wireless computers, you can connect them wireless to the router. Kindly follow the instructions below:

6. Connect wireless computer to the router.

If you are using Windows XP with Service Pack 1, please follow the steps below:

a. Please right click on the Wireless icon on the right lower end portion of your computer.
b. Then click on View Available Wireless Networks.
c. Click on the Advanced tab.

a. Click Start then select Connect To.
b. Connect to a network window will show up.
c. Select your wireless network and click Connect.

Why did the router ID change when I linked it via the Wps button to the DSTV wifi gadget ?

Here's and excerpt from the Netgear WNR2000 user manual explaining that this is normal behavior for Netgear routers that support WPS..:
  • Keep Existing Wireless Settings. This check box is automatically selected after WPS is enabled to prevent unwanted settings changes, and is also selected if you have already specified wireless security settings or your SSID without using WPS. When this check box is not selected, adding a new wireless client using the push button or the Add WPS Client screen (see "Push Button Configuration" on page 2-14) changes the router's SSID and security passphrase. You might need to clear it if you are using certain registrars, such as for a Windows Vista PC, to configure the router through WPS.
Even if your router is not a WNR2000, it is likely that the configuration interface pretty much the same so you might be helped by looking at Chapter 2 page 17 in the WNR2000 manual here..:
Or else, go to Netgear support (NETGEAR Support Welcome), select Wi-Fi routers and download/display the user manual pdf and search it for "disable router's pin" or "keep existing wireless settings" and verify/change the setting so the router doesn't make changes when you use the WPS button.

I have a net gear wnr 2000 trying to hook up a wn2000rpt using the wps button and it's not workin

try it first w/o encryption to see if it will connect.

also note that SOME wireless WPS-capable equipment documentation says that it will only work with WEP-level encryption; so read your doc's and be informed. WEP can be broken in about 30-seconds with today's technology.....fyi

Machine does not appear to have WPS button, where is it.

Some wireless routers will have a WPS button. Printers do not have one. As you set up a printer to connect to your wireless network, you press the WPS button on the router when prompted by the setup program.

If your router has a WPS button, it will usually be on the back of the router. However, on the Netgeat WNR3500-100NAS, the button is on the bottom front of the router. If your router doesn't have a WPS button, log into the router's administrator page. (In your browser, type in http:// + the I.P. address of your router. (It will often be 192.168.1.1 .) Enter the administrator name and password. (admin is the common administrator account name). Then go to the Wi-fi page, there will be a way to start the WPS signal. (This assumes you are using a security protocol that is compatible with the WPS setting. WPA/WPA2 are compatible; WEP isn't (if I recall correctly).) Most router manufacturers have a default administrator password. I strongly recommend changing from the default passwords; they are available in any manual.
The alternative is to type in the name of your wireless network and its security password during the printer setup.
Please add a comment with your specific router make and model. I will be glad to tell you where on the unit a WPS button is, if one is present. I can also give you information on the default administrator account and password.

How do I secure the network

The securing process in your wireless router is set by choosing the "Wireless Settings" (with my Netgear, anyway) screen. The bottom portion of the screen lets you set various things re. security, like WEP, WPS-PSK (TKIP), WPA2-PSK (AES), and on. Different levels of security demand different types of passwords as well.

You can find the wireless security password by accessing the router'sadmin page http://192.168.0.1 (username is admin and password is password) then go to the wireless security tab. There you can find the password or WEP key (10-digit code). If you can't login to the router'sadmin page, you can reset the router by pressing the reset button atthe back of it for 20 seconds then power cycle the router by turning itoff for 10 seconds.
