On yahoo messenger it says webcam not connected so when i open the cam just for the laptop it says that the cam is locked by another application. so i have to restart the laptop and click the webcam button as soon as it logs me on so i can use the cam why does it do this? cna i fix it?
I don't know what exactly fixed the problem but I managed to fix it. I'm using a Toshiba Satellite A215 by the way.
Here's what I did
Control Panel >> System Maintenance >> Device Manager
Go to Imaging Devices and right-click "Chicony USB 2.0 Camera" and choose "Update Driver Software"
First I clicked on "Search automatically for updated driver software" but everything was already up to date. So then I went to "Browse my Computer for Driver Software" and then to "Let Me Pick from a List". I updated the USB Video Device and rebooted but that only made it worse I think. Then I tried updating one of the "Chicony USB 2.0 Camera"'s and that did the trick. Yey. So now my webcam works.
Control Panel >> System > Device Manager
Go to Imaging Devices and right-click "Chicony USB 2.0 Camera" and choose "Update Driver Software"
First I clicked Camera Usb cable net install web cam drivers next open cam then ok
Try going into Windows Defender and make sure that programs like messenger, yahoo and skype don't start automatically when you start the computer. Then go into the options for Messenger and set it up so that it does not start automatically when you log in. Then shut down and start up the computer again after you have made these changes. This worked for me on a Toshiba Satellite.

Hi there. I tried to install automatically the driver but it was up to date, so i clicked on it and it asked whether i wanted to undo the last installation and i said yes. It worked. I think the problem was an automatic update stuffed it up. Working great now
Don't click the Viewer from explorer
Try downloading the drivers from the toshiba webpage and then reinstalling the camera... it sometimes works for me...
I suggest that you clear the startup menu. Some programs running at system startup locks the webcam for its own operation

I just fixed my problem that i had posted. when ever any messenger runs on start up it uses the devices needed, so go to star-run-type MSCONFIG-go to star up option un tick the messengers only restart-then go to my computer - device manager - imaging devices - right click update automatical from internet option and then disable and enable the device give a restart and your problem will be solved.
please also check that your computer time date and country or time sone is right.
most built in cameras have the same problem meaning the cams that come with a laptop. And the ones that are external should not have such problems if it dose then please install the cam in D drive then it will be fine. And please go to start - run -type MSCONFIG- and go to start up and check if your camer is running on start up if it is please untick it and your problem will be resolved.

You have an application that is grabbing the webcam on bootup, so the best way is to disable this program from runnning. To do this, click Start - Run and type "msconfig" and press enter.
Click on the Startup tab and this will bring up a list of all the things you have booting. Look for webcam manager, and remove the checkmark beside it. Click Ok and then reboot. Problem should be solverd

Check if you download any new application that makes a conflict with your webcam? just remeber if you did download any program and this makes the problems, if you donot want to do this , just go to start, programms, accessories, system tools, and restore yout pc to the day before this problem happened and you will be fine.

Hey, I think I found out how to fix it:
Go Control Panel, then click "add or remove programs" at the left (for Vista).
Once you get there, find your currently installed camera and right click on it; you should then be able to CHANGE it (ie: click change). Once you do that, click the repair option, and it should do something. It worked for me, I dunno if itll work for you tho, but its worth a try.
Since I bought it, I have the same problem with my Laptop TOSHIBA SATELLITE. Never more in my life I will buy again a TOSHIBA. Toshiba should be ASHEIMED of that, but they HAPPY and don't resolve the problem. Automatcally Toshiba do what we don't need, but automatically don't fix OURS (THEIRS) TROUBLE!!

hey guys i just buy the new comp u 300 and having the same problem with the cam . saying its locked by other application. i did refresh the software it solved out but strugling withe the same problem again and again. what i can do next plx advise me .........
The fix is.
To disable to startup item for the toshiba camera assistant software.
Start->Start Search->type in msconfig->Go to Startup Tab->Untick Chicony Traybar.click ok and restart.
That should fix it.
