I have a 3 year old Coleman Powermate 6250 (PM0545008), Never used. Engine starts but no power being generated. I "excited" it by hooking up a 12 V battery to the brushes as per the manual, only 12 V coming out when battery hooked up. When I take the 12 v battery off, no more power.. I called the 800 tech support and they said company went bankrupt, nothing they can do.
Please help.
I found out you must run the generator at least once every three months otherwise the capacitor will not hold a charge. You can try to jump it by connecting the negative lead from a 12 volt battery to the left contact on the back panel and while the motor is running touch the positive terminal. If a test light is plugged it will light up but if it goes out you must replace the rectifier board which is about $30
Try this! To excite it. Shut off the generator! Unplug everything,Then use the 12 volt battery to excite it per manual. Make sure the engine is NOT running and the breaker switch is in the on position. Now with the battery 12V removed restart the generator! This should fix it if the problem is that it lost its magnetism.
