Replacing the belt

I am trying to replace the belt on my vacuum cleaner, but when I put it back together, the brush will not turn.  For some reason, where you put the brush back in there is one end that is round so it will rotate, and one end that is rectangular - so it will not rotate.  I know I'm missing something, but what?

Holding the ends of the brush roll, you should be able to spin it. if not then the brush is bad and will have to replaced. Part # is 2032032 and will sell for around $16 or so.

Brush doesn't move

Your belt is broken and needs to be replaced. Turn this brush side up. Unscrew the cover plate and you will see where the belt goes. Pull out roller, put on new belt, put back together and there you go.

How to remove brush cover of discovery advantage upright vscume cleaner

Lay vacuum on table or other surface on it's front.
Remove the 4-5 screws on the base plate.
There may be a rectangular hole on each side of the wheels. If so, insert a standard screwdriver and rotate gently to release latches.
Carefully hold the halves together and turn vacuum onto it's back.
Lifting from the back, remove the power nozzle cover.

If replacing the belt or brush, remove the screws located at each end of the brush. Lift brush out and remove belt.
You can no replace the belt, brush, or both. I also recommend giving the insides a good cleaning before reassembling. Make sure when you reassemble, insert the lip of the cover into the slot, then close the back. Some gentle manipulating may be necessary.

Is it necessary to take the vacuum cleaner apart to change the belt on a Hoover Wind Tunnel Self Propelled vacuum cleaner, model UI6460-900? If so, how is that done? If not, how do you get the belt on...

To change the belts, make sure the vacuum is not plugged in. Lay it upside down and remove the screws holding the bottom plate on. Remove the bottom plate, pull the brush roll out noting how the belt goes so you will know how to put it back together. Especially how it goes around the idler pulley. Remove both belts, replace both belts, install the V belt onto the transmission first then around the brush roll and put the brush roll in place. Install the flat belt around the motor shaft and then onto the transmission pulley.

The belt on my vacuum cleaner model 6596 bissel powerforce bagless turbo keeps breaking. As soon as I put on a new belt and start it up the belt snaps. It is the durabelt meant for this vacuum model....

I would guess you aren't centering the belt correctly, thus it's edge is caught between the brush and another solid object, causing the breakage.
When you get the belt on the the brush and the brush back in place, turn the brush a few times by hand to make sure it's not catching on anything. After you get the powerhead put back together, do this again. It's a common problem if the powerhead isn't assembled correctly.

Here's a video clip from the Bissell site demonstrating changing the belt.

Brush won't spin. Put it back on the ribbed belt

Make sure the driving motor (power on) is turning (without the belt attached). Make sure the brush turns freely when the belt is off (it's probably jammed with wound-up hair, thread, and other debris--remove the brush and clean/lightly oil the bearings). Check the tension of the belt which should be fairly firm--replace if sloppy. Rotate the motor shaft by hand when everything is back together and make sure the brush can be driven without the belt trying to jump off. Hope this helps!

Have eureka 9734 replaced belt, put back together, brush rotates well but vacuum is not picking up anything, no suction.

It sounds like the machine is clogged. Check the port behind the belt and any and all hoses for obstructions and remove.

Main Brush Failure

first check if the brush motor is turning before you spend money on a new brush roller and belt. remove the belt by unscrewing the screws holding the brush cover ( the part touching the floor ) and slip the belt of the rotor. turn the vacuum on, and the brush on while the vacuum is in a reclined position. if the motor is not moving, you need a new motor.

Bissell Proheat Clearview - Belt and pump keep melting

Is the brush roll turning freely? Is there something binding the pump pulley or belt casuing it to not turn? Was the replacement pump a new one? If you replace these parts again, after doing so, try turning the pump pulley by hand to see if it will turn the brush roll easlly, if it doesn't then there is a problem.
