Do a google search for tomtom then connect it to your computer after installing tomtom home and it should automatically update, you will firstly need to set up an account with tomtom though. (free i think)

The usual way to update your TomTom GPS is using the TomTom HOME software that you download and installed on your computer/laptop. Then set up your TomTom account (using the TomTom HOME application) and registered your TomTom device (in that account) on the TomTom webiste
After that, connect your TomTom device to your computer/laptop (using the USB cable). Turn on the TomTom device, and touch the YES icon (on your TomTom screen) if it asks whether you'd like to connect to the computer.
You should be able to see the updates available for your TomTom device (on the TomTom HOME application). Select the updates you want and (download and) install them.
Recently TomTom has stopped providing software/map updates and/or support for certain (older) models of their TomTom GPS. If you see such a notice when you register your TomTom device, your option is to get a newer GPS model (you may even get an offer on the TomTom HOME screen), or you can continue to use your device without updating the software and/or maps until it becomes unhelpful, unreliable, etc.

Basically, you need:
- to have (i.e. download and install) the TomTom HOME (or MyDrive Connect) software on your computer
- to set up a TomTom user account and register your device
- to connect the device to your computer, and start the TomTom software.
- to sign in to your TomTom account and view the info/updates available for your device
- to select and download the data/software/map that you want, to update your device
I'm assuming you have a TomTom device and not one (an older model) that TomTom has reduce/limit/stop providing support/updates.

TomTomAug 28, 2015 - To check for an updated application version do the following: Connect your TomTom device to your computer and switch it on. If HOME does not automatically check for updates, click Update my device in the HOME menu. If a new application is available, it is listed on the next screen. Click Done.
When you connect your TomTom (using the TomTom HOME application on your computer) ... and you sign in to your TomTom account, it will automatically do a scan/search to see if there's any update(s) for your TomTom device.
If you see the an update (available) for your Navigation software, select it and proceed to download and install it. MapShare updates are also identified and can be selected, downloaded and installed (free).
If you're asking whether you can update the map free ... the answer is NO ... not from the TomTom website. You'll have to buy a map update (subscription) and download the new version of the map and install it.

I'm following these instructions:
Installing TomTom HOME Install TomTom HOME on your computer in the following way.
Connect your computer to the Internet and then connect your TomTom ONE to your computer using the USB cable.
A pop-up window appears. Select Run TomTom HOME. Click OK and follow the on-screen instructions.
If the pop-up window does not appear, browse to the TomTom device on your computer and run the file named Install TomTom HOME.
TomTom HOME is also available for download from the TomTom website.

Once installed, TomTom HOME will start automatically whenever you connectyour TomTom to your computer.
There are free downloads / updates of tomtom firmware from the tomtom home site but as far as I know there are no free updates for maps. The firmware updates can be performed using tomtom home software that came with your tomtom or by going to http://www.tomtom.com/plus/service.php?ID=17
You will need to connect your tomtom to your PC via USB and have the SD card in as the update will perform updating of certain files on the card.
The update will allow better function and enable faster fixes on satellite's and also iron out any reported bugs that have become known to tomtom so its well worth doing.
