Fixing Errors On Your PC for Windows Vista,7,8 and 8.1

I'm only going to show those interested how to run chkdsk (check disk) and fix errors, there are other commands mostly you'll just want to run this command. Click the Start button in the Search box, type command prompt in the list of results, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. In the command prompt, type in the following command chkdsk C: /F . Only type what is in bold, what this is going to do is check the drive for error and fix those errors. If the drive isn't locked it will bring up a message asking to scan the drive on the next restart click yes, if the drive is locked it will start scanning automatically. This depending on how large your hard drive is can take some time or not, be patient because this usually always fixes issues people are having that call me, other times I have to look at their PCs. Hope this helps you out.

Vista's System Recovery Console

Vista's System Recovery Console

First, Boot from your Vista installation CD.

Select your Vista Install from the list in Windows Boot Manager

· Microsoft Vista Setup (x86)
· Microsoft Vista Setup (x64)

Press enter.

You will then see Windows is Loading Files.

Next, the Language Screen will come up. Since you have already selected this option when you installed Vista, just click on Next.

Now you will see the Vista Installation Screen.

DO NOT CHOOSE Install Now

Instead, towards the bottom left of the window you will see.

· What to know before installing Windows

· Repair your Computer

Choose and click on Repair your Computer

You will then come to the System Recovery Options. Choose Microsoft Windows Vista from the list. Then click Next.

You will now have the option to choose which Recovery Tools you wish to use.

This list provides details to the five tools that can help you repair your Vista installation. These tools are:

1. Startup Repair

Automatically fix problems that are preventing Windows from starting:

Startup Repair is an automated repair process that scans your Vista installation for problems and attempts to automatically fix them. When you select to repair Vista from the Vista setup screen, and Vista detects problems, this process will be started automatically. You can cancel this process at any time to access the other repair tools described below. The Startup Repair process has already been introduced above when we discussed performing an automated repair.

2. System Restore

Restore Windows to an earlier point in time:

System Restore allows you to restore your computer's configuration, driver information, and programs to a previous state while leaving your existing data intact. Using this option can typically fix a installation's problem if it is not associated with faulty hardware. In order to use this option, you must have had System Restore enabled in Vista so that there are restore points available to restore to.

3. Windows Complete PC Restore

Restore your entire computer from a backup:

Complete PC Restore is a feature that allows you to restore your entire computing environment from a backup image that you created previously. The ability to create backup images for Complete PC Restore is only available in Windows Vista Business, Ultimate, and Enterprise. If you have tried all possible steps to repair your computer, and have a Complete PC Restore backup image available from when your computer was operating properly, then you can use this repair option to restore that image.

4. Windows Memory Diagnostic Tools

Check your computer for memory hardware errors:

Windows Vista comes with a diagnostic tool that allows you to check the memory installed in your computer for errors. This will allow you to determine if the actual memory (RAM) hardware installed in your computer is creating errors.

5. Command Prompt

Opens the Command Prompt window:

The Command Prompt repair tool allows you to open a command prompt that you can use to access the files and registry information on your computer. This is an invaluable tool for removing security threats such as worms, rootkits, and other malware from your computer and to be able to access files when Vista fails to boot up.

Command Prompts

To help get you started with using the Command Prompt. Here are listed a series of console commands that work in this environment. To get the help information for each of these programs you can type the program name followed by /h and press the enter key. For example, to see the help information for the copy command you would type copy /h and then press the enter key. As more programs and commands are found they will be added to the lists below. Each of the console commands must be typed into the console in order to execute them.

Console Command Description

Copy - Copy a file to another location.

Move - Move a file to another location.

Rd - Remove an empty directory.

Ren - Rename a file or directory.

More - Show the contents of a file one page a time. Typically used to read text/ascii files.

Type - Show the contents of a file all at once without pausing at each page like the more command. Typically used to read text/ascii files.

Xcopy - Copy a folder and all its contents to another location.

mkdir - Make a new directory.

Diskpart - Load the Windows disk management program. From this program you can create, delete, shrink, and expand your existing partitions as well as get information about partitions and hard drives.

Dir - List the contents of the current directory or the directory you specify as an argument.

Cd - Change your current directory to another one.

Attrib - Change the file attributes on a particular file or directory.

Del - Delete a file

Bcdedit - Displays and allows you to change how Windows boots up. This command is useful for people who are having trouble with the Windows Boot Manager.

Chkdsk - Scan your hard disk for errors and fix them.

Choose the above options that best fits your computer problems.

The first option (Startup Repair) will run automatically. And will fix or repair Vista’s MBR and check for any corrupt files and folders.

NOTE: This option will also remove any installed program(s) that could be causing Vista not to start, or run correctly.

Note: If you are running a RAID array, if this does not help and you are receiving errors. Check in your BIOS and make sure the BIOS did not convert back to IDE. Vista needs to see the complete MBR, In a RAID setup the MBR is split between two drives.

Setup windows vista or windows 7 from pendrive

This tutorial will help you in creating a bootable USB drive of Windows Vista which you can use to install Vista in any system. It might become very useful when you don't have access to DVD drive.
1. First format your USB drive in NTFS file system. You can do it by attaching your USB drive to your system and then format it from My Computer window.
2. Now open Command Prompt window from Start menu. Right-click on Command Prompt entry in start menu and select "Run as administrator" option.
3. Now type diskpart in Command Prompt window and press Enter. It'll launch DiskPart program:
launchdiskpart.jpg
4. Now provide following command:
list volume
It'll show a list of all drives in your system. Look for your USB drive entry. As in the below screenshot, the USB drive is "G" which you can determine from its "Type" entry.
Now you have to select the USB drive volume by providing select volume no. command. Since in our case volume no. of USB drive is "Volume 4", the command would be:
select volume 4
Now we have to make this drive active. So provide active command:
active
Now exit from DiskPart using exit command.
usingdiskpart.jpg
5. Now we need to create Boot sector on USB drive. We'll use "bootsect.exe" utility for this task. You can find this utility in Windows Vista setup disk. It'll be present in "Boot" directory.
Now provide following command in Command Prompt:
bootsect /nt60 G:
Here G is drive letter of USB drive. Replace it with the correct drive letter if your system has some other letter for USB drive.
installingbootloaderonusb.jpg
6. At last, copy all files/folders from Vista Setup DVD to your USB drive and you have done.
Now you can boot using your USB drive and can install Windows Vista in any system.

My laptop was on hibernation. now it is not booting. please help

Hibernation is enabled by default in Windows Vista, and is one of the seven options (i.e. Hibernate) that appears on the Vista shutdown menu. Hibernate your Vista system will enable you to quickly restore to existing system state and intact workspace instead of start afresh, run programs and open your documents one by one again. If you do not use the hibernate feature in Vista, and want to delete hiberfil.sys and then recover the space occupied by the big hibernation storage file, the hibernation function can be turned off and disabled.
Unlike Windows XP, users cannot turn the hibernation on or off via Vista GUI interface anymore. Previously users can enable or disable hibernation via Power Options applet in Control Panel. This option no longer available in Windows Vista, which also enables Hibernate ability and creates hiberfil.sys by default. Instead, users have to rely on command line utility Powercf and Disk Cleanup Wizard to disable hibernation in Vista. Microsoft KB920730 provides details on how to disable and turn off hibernation on computer running Vista system. You must log on to Vista with user account in Administrators group to perform these action.

Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
In the search results list, right-click Command Prompt or Cmd, and then click Run as Administrator on the pop up contextual menu.
If you are prompted by User Account Control for permission, click Continue.
At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

powercfg.exe -h off
Type exit, and then press ENTER.

Another easier workaround for those who’re not comfortable to work with command line is to disable hibernation and hybrid sleep feature in Windows Vista is by using Disk Cleanup wizard tool, the built-in Windows disk cleaner to delete hiberfil.sys file. The hibernation file must be enabled to access the hybrid sleep feature and the hibernation feature in Windows Vista.
Click Start button, then go to All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools, and run Disk Cleanup.
Choose which files to clean up, either My files only or Files from all users on this computer is fine.

On “Drive Selection”, select the Windows Vista boot drive to clean up. Note that you must select the drive where Vista is installed, which normally is also the boot drive (C:) as hiberfil.sys file will be located on the root folder of it.

Once Disk Cleanup finishes scanning the system, Disk Cleanup for Vista window will open.
Select and tick the check box next to the Hibernation File Cleaner.

You can select or deselect other type files to clean or preserve from the available items or options in the list provided.
Click OK button when done.
Hibernation will now be removed and disabled.

It will solve your problem.
