It sounds like you updated with the wrong BIOS or a BIOS version that isn't designed for your specific model laptop. You will have to revert back to your old BIOS version.

Try plugging in to the external monitor again and toggling the video output using FN+F5 a few times. This happens when the Mother board, which is the place were all the cables meet inside the computer might not be working correctly. This process needs to be handle by a professional to change the Mother Board.

My Toshiba Satellite does a similar thing, It goes gray while I am working on it. The only way to continue to work on it is to complete shut it down manually and reboot. I took it to Toshiba they said nothing was wrong.
