I have a 1982 Evinrude 35 hp motor. After running it at tops for about 5 minutes, I go to trolling mode and in about 5-10 minutes in overheats. Steam coming from the water outlet holes. This happened 3 times in one day. No weeds, inlet clean. I figure a bad pump impeller. I take it apart and the impeller is fine. What's up?? Obstruction in the lines? Can't be the sending unit because when the alarm goes off, there is steam coming out. Anybody have a idea??? rroboe

My smaller johnson had a pickup tube in the housing. With your alarm you only know when it is too hot. You do not know how close you are to setting the alarm at full throttle; it can be running hotter than it should then too. I would drop the lower unit, pull the sending unit and try to force water through the sending unit hole. This should backflush the head. Backflush the impeller housing too.

I have a 35 HP 1982 I think Evinrude that Will not shut off . Starts fine.

This motor should still be running the 2 magnetos under the flywheel. There should be a wire connected to both sets of points which comes out from under the flywheel looking like a light cord. If you touch these two together, the motor dies. (job of the key switch_) So your key switch is faulty or wired wrong. The two terminals labled (M) should be connected to these.

Outboard motor overheating

Mate. The powerhead(engine block) is clogged.Don,t run it anymore untill its cleaned out or the motor will cook.Take the heads off 1st and see whats in the water jackets. It will probably be blocked.A build up of white 'gunk' is the main indicator. If thats the case,a complete cleanout is needed.Hope this helps

Have 90 hp evinrude 1982 What rpms should it be running on idle?

You can get rpm data by searching your browser using "90hp Evinrude Specs" or "1982 90hp Evinrude idle specs". Changing the jets usually costs you performance on one end or the other. If you have needle rods, a narrower one will have the same effect as a bigger opening in a jet. But you have rpm limits that you should not exceed. Changing the prop can give you more power over the sacrifice of top end speed.
