Use straight 140w G-4 gear oil. Oriely Auto parts carry it in one gallon jugs for $12.00. NAPA auto parts stores can order it also but it is more expensive.

The recommended lube for a Troy Bilt transmission is 140 Gear Lube. It's tough to find. If you use lighter oil, the trans seals will likely start to leak.

What kind of oil do I put in the crank case of my Troy bolt tiller th1018 rear tine

hi.
this is what i found on the net not sure if this will help you out.
Add approximately 5/8-quart of SAE-30 oil the first time you add oil. Use 5W-30 or 10W-30 oil if you are using the tiller when the temperature is below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Replace the dipstick.
or go to this link.

What type of oil does a troy built tiller use? I have lost my book.

This is dependent upon what the engine application on the tiller is. If it's 2-stroke, use a quality synthetic or semi-synthetic 2-stroke oil mixed with the gas. If it has a 4 stroke engine use SAE30 oil, unless you run synthetic (which I highly recommend), then you can use a multi-viscosity oil if you like, say 10W-30.

Tiller will not engage tines

Is this a two speed or a 4 speed ... it is a MTD built Troy or a Troy built Troy or do you know?

There were two versions of Horse built in Troy, New York bu Gardenway ... the two speed and the 4 speed. The two speed used two belts the same size while the 4 speed used one belt on different sized pulleys. There was also a variation that used a slip gear ... this model was built to accomodate other accesories ... log splitter and generator.

If yours is a Troy Built from Garden Way, I can help you. If this one is from MTD, I'm not so sure. Can you ID your machine for me please?

Go to this website and type in Horse for your model number.Just put thenumber 1 in for your serial number and it will bring up several horse tiller manuals. If yours is a 1976 then it should be
a Horse I model. This should be a two speed tiller and have two drive belts.

Shift your Wheel gear lever to "disengage". Use the disengage position only when the engine is not running.
