Boss BR 1180 CD / Cannot switch on.

When I try start the recorder (BOSS BR 1180 CD), the display and those two light (light-diodes), ( (peak- diodes, placed just under SENS POT-METER ( Guitar- mic 2 / Mic 1 ), upper left of the unit, just flash up for a very short moment.
I've also tryied checked the voltage in differ places, and it looks like I have the + 12 V. power ( 72015301 Main Board Assy ) When I meassure on connector CN 109 (4-pins, named B4B-XH-A, located down right on the Main Board Assy), I can meassure + 12 V, but short of the + 5 V, which means that the + 5 V Power Board Assy, are feeded with the 12 V, but missing the + 5 V. (connector CN 114 on the + 5 V Power Board Assy)
At last I will mention that when I pull the Main Power Swich Breaker on, I can meassure a short reaktion , similar to the time of the ligt diodes when try starting the recorder. (I can read a small signal on my volt-meter, about 1,2 - 1,5 V, but dies out in milli-secounds).

Is this a well-known problem ? It looks like a short-cut, but hope not.

Hope someone can help me.

    Hey there...

    Me again....

Can you give me a "hint" where I can serch for the mentioned condenser / capacitor.

Do you agree that the location for the conductor (C) may be on the Main Board Assy.

    Finaly, when you say register.

What do you exactly mean ? (do this belongs to the H.D ?)place condensor

    Hey, hey....

    Priciates you help.

I know there can be a problem, even for you, to sit miles away to fix problems like this.

Your solutions could absolutely have given an end of my problems, but in this case, they didn't.

Anyway, this was the reason. (the simplyest is sometimes the easyest)

The real reason were a broken conection in the flat 18P-cable, (the connection between CN 112

and CN 107) Seventeen of eighteen were broken.

In the "block diagram", which I've used for this ((Service Notes, Issued by RJA, may 2002),

opperatin, there's a misleading / defect on the mentioned bloc-diagram.

The Connector CN 107, are named as CN 117.

Finally, I would like to ask you if there are any way to upgrade my BR 1180 CD.

What about the fragmentation of the HD. Are there any ways for deregmentation ?

Thank you very much, and so long.

    Priciate an answer.

    Magne Gillebo.

In order to properly check some parts of the circuit board, you will need to unsolder one end of it (or better said all leads except for one) i would start with some of the diodes that come from the main power source. and test for diode functionality..(voltage one way and none the other) and if those check out ok you can move onto the smaller transistors (the small 3 legged ones which are easier to remove by putting a soldering iron across all 3 solder pads and pulling the part out) Remember which way it was facing as well. Then test the transistors from the emitter to the base... and switch leads..should get a resistance one way and none the other, kind of like a diode....then the collector to the base...same thing... (can research a little on testing transistors) most case the middle is the base and the outside leads can be the Emitter and other the collector. Again focus on the ones starting at the problem points... might want to re-install the ones that test ok to prevent any mistakes. If you find a part thats not reading properly, you can order them from an electronics store or even online to have them mailed to you...just get the info from the part itself. Most of the time Capacitors bulge or blister when they fail. and most of the smaller IC's act as a transistor also but tend to not fail (very rare) the Diodes...small fuses and transistors are usually the culprit. I Hope This helps give you at least a starting point in solving this problem.
PS make sure you are using a tester with a 9V battery....some use AA's which do NOT produce enough voltage to test these parts.

Something to add is the possibility that the switch itself isnt maintaining a contact, it could be a momentary switch (which is what it might supposed to be) or it could be a pushbutton switch that has broken and thus become a "Momentary switch" You can also try to hold the button in and try to operate it. If it does not work then, then go ahead and test some components (while its tuned off) and good luck with the troubleshooting. Keep posting and ill keep answering. (i slept on this one and thought of this simple fix possibility)

Hi there,

This problem seems like there is some register or condenser not working properly.
first of all you need to check for any blown condenser on the board.

post comment for more help.
Thanks

Hi. My boss br 1600 will n ot start. I turn on the power source and it will blink for a split second and then nothing. I checked for loose connections but everything seems ok. Any suggestions?

I have this problem with mine. I've did some research and with the boss br 600 this problem can arise quite often .it's caused by a faulty power diode apparently except in that case I've never heard ofrom the screen blinking at all (which my 1600 also does) I wonder I'd this problem can be the same for a br 600 as the br 600

I'm trying to burn a song to a CD-R using a Boss BR 1180 but every time it completes, there's no song on the CD. I record, bounce, record on 9/10, then try to write to CD and it never works.

"it never works"... this is NOT enough information for us. You are not telling us how the CD is tested. If you are testing it in a boombox type player, that is not a test. First thing is to look at the bottom of the CD to see if you can detect written tracks... with right lighting you can tell if it has been burned. REMEMBER that CD's, unlike phonograph records, are written from the middle outward. Many consumer players have trouble playing CD's that are written but not "finalized". If you CAN see written area (compare to unburned CD) then likely the burning is taking place, and the problem is the format is either not complete or incompatible with your player. Try reading the disk in your computer. Also you might want to visit the forums for the Boss/Roland workstations at VSPLANET.com.

My Boss BR-1180 was working fine but said NO CD DRIVE so I replaced the cd drive and as soon as I did I turned it on it reads BOSS BR11-80 and the HD ACCESS light stays lit but nothing else happens. Did I...

hdd should not be damaged, if your hd and cd are on same ide cable it might be taking the cd as master and not the hd, ensure the jumper on the back of the new cd drive is set in the same position as the old one was, as test remove cd and boot system, hd should act again as usual. this will show that there is a ide conflict.

my assumption is that your cd jumper should be set to slave or cable select position.
you may have to try each until you find the position that works.

I hope this was useful.

regards Martin.

BR-1180 freezing & high-pitch ring

Check your power supply to the unit. Low voltage COULD cause this.

Also make sure a setting is not "looping" the audio back into itself.

No CD writer for Boss BR-1180

Hey mike yeah you can hook a regular cdr drive to the ribbon but the problem is if its not a slim it most likely wont fit inside the unit. Also the built in c.d r is way over rated mine has it and I still bounce it all onto my computer and then burn it from there. The one on the br-1180cd burns very quiet.

Is the Boss Dr-5 compatable with the Boss BR-1180 mini studio?

Midi doesn't actually "make sound". If your trying to record the patterns you made on the DR-5 to the recorder you need to use an audio output(I don't remember if they are RCA or 1/4" on the DR-5.) The midi output would be used to"trigger sounds" in another device that has sounds built in, or you could also trigger sounds in a program that supports midi input.
