SOURCE: kohler lowboy toilet seat does not have bolts underneath
My wife wanted to replace our Kohler low boy with a self closing seat. We got a Westport whisper close with unlock-able hinges for easy cleaning. I followed the above advice to use brute force to yank out the Kohler bolts. I then used a hacksaw to cut the new plastic seat bolts so that they would not extend past the thickness of the porcelain. I drilled the plastic bolts thru so that a small drywall toggle bolt would fit thru. Use a washer to prevent it from pulling thru, screw on the toggle and cut off excess screw length so it does not bottom out inside the cavity. Insert the assembly in the hole and tighten. Snap on & lock the Westport seat and you are good to go!

These bolt covers usually come with the seats as one piece. You can also purchase generic bolt covers at your local hardware shop but it will look a little different.
