The mp3 player was on MTP mode; it needed to be switched to USB mode, which can be done by holding the M button for a few seconds while the player is plugged in to the computer.
put music tracks on to PC and then use windows media to transfer them to your player. When you connect it via the usb it will register on your pc.
I have succesfully done all of this.
