SOURCE: SATA HDD not working

Avinash thaks for providing the exact error..

Re: A Disk Read Error Occured. Press CTRL ALT DEL to restart

1 - Have you tried a different IDE cable?
If not give it a go and do a repair if needed again!

2 - You may have a corrupt MBR (master boot record)!! You will need to reformat and do Fdisk /mbr to delete the master boot record!! Save all data first as this will not allow you to access any of your data as all file location addresses are located in the MBR!!

3 - Your harddrive may have a bad sector get a zerofill tool(low level formatting tool)!! This will rewrite you HD's sectors putting them back to factory spec's!! Maxtors is called Maxblast you can get it from thier site!!

4 - or it could be a defective drive, but most read errors are due ot corrupt MBR or a bad sector!! Good Luck D.i.l.i.p

SOURCE: SATA HDD make SLAVE

IDE Cable with 3 connectors (you have 1 or need to buy 1) :
- blue: conn to motherboard
- black: conn to master HD
- grey: conn to slave HD
Cable (select:) cable will auto detect with most modern HD's from same type (SATA it was i think) and you need to go to you're BIOS, set up cable select for the HD's. Maybe best to set up master first, not both at same time. If you have a SATA and ATA set up the master first, then other. So if SATA is slafe but it in grey connector, otherwise black. For an ATA you might need a converter cable for the power, most motherboards don't have 1.

SOURCE: HOW TO CHANGE 320GB SATA HDD TO 500GB SATA

Yes. The case doesn't care what size the drive is. The computer is just asking for the USB driver for the case. Check the WD site for the driver for the model of MyBook that you have. That should cover it.

How do I read a barracuda 7200.12 1 TB drive? I need to get data off of it, not boot on it

Hi
The easiest way that I have found is to get a kit that allows you to power the drive from a separate wall socket and connect a data cable from the drive to a USB socket on the computer. Such a kit usually consists of four components:
A mains lead - wall socket to black box transformer
The black box transformer - has outlet 4 pin molar for IDE drives
A USB cable ending in unit for connecting to an IDE drive or SATA cable
A SATA cable for connecting to the SATA drive (your Barracuda 1Tb in this case)
The components can be seen on this Ebay site:-
USB 2 0 TO SATA IDE Cable for HDD with Power Converter Adapter UK
The one thing missing from this set up is a power conversion cable converting the molar 4 pin power connector to a SATA power connector. These can be a molar plug to go into the lead from the black box and either a single SATA power plug, or a double SATA power connector as shown here :
Molex to 2x SATA Power Dual Power Adaptor Splitter Cable Lead Hdd Cd DVD...
This option is inexpensive and offers great flexibility in the type of drives that can be connected to a USB port, 2.5 or 3.5 inch, SATA or IDE.
In your particular case you may be able to get a dock that connects to a power supply and a USB port, with an opening in the top to take a SATA drive. These tend to be more expensive and only suitable for SATA drives not IDE.
Hope this is helpful, if so would you please register that with Fixya
Cheers

Can i just hook it up and run the disk wizard? or is there another formatting ,partitioning tool I should get?

Use Disk Wizard. No 3rd party tools are required at all.

Scenario: 1 Pipeline SATA. 1 Barracuda SATA. 1 IDE drive with current OS. Is this correct?
Just treat the Pipeline from the DVR as an extra drive by formatting it, and moving the files over. You then can remove the IDE and Pipeline for peace of mind, but the OS advance setup should give the option of all three drives for install destination.

Leaving the IDE drive should not affect your resources.

My new 500GB SATA II HDD gets heated very quickly and I have my old IDE HDD still working and it doesnt get much heated even if it is on for 12hours continously. Just in a matter of 15 to 20mins the...

This is normal. SATA II drives spin much faster and run much hotter then IDE drives. You can attach a hard drive cooler to the hard drive if you wish and if there is enough room in your case.

Can I transfer data from 250GB IDE HDD to a SATA II 500GB HDD

Yes you can. You may have to go in BIOS or and select your SATA as the first drive to boot off of though, else it might try to boot off the old IDE. But once you're in windows, it will appear as another drive in my computer.

Thanks and please take a moment to rate as fixya.

Connecting an IDE HDD to a SATA port using an IDE to SATA converter

Not complete product...need to buy additional adapter for IDE to SATA power source.
IDE drive will have to have the power source hooked up as well as the adaptor hooked up.
Installing the adaptor only will not work. Your computer should have the 4 pin plug for the power to the IDE drive, other wise you will have to buy another adaptor.
