The start button may be broken as it only works if it is constantly held in. As soon as it is pressed in the red light comes on as if it is going to start and then switches off

That sounds like oil but there's nowhere the oil would be coming from except the rear bearing but that would be more of a grey or black colour.Is your fabric softener yellow.it could be fabric softener.try not using any for a couple of loads & see.I don't know if the dots are washing off but fabric softener stains will normally wash off.oil won't.
I saw my repair man do the following, which you might try...
Open the door and simultaneously press & hold down the power button with the 2 buttons used on your model to "Cancel & Drain." If the unit comes on it now is in self-diagnosis mode. Release the buttons and close the door. The unit should start to fill with water. Press the power button to exit the mode.
It sounds like you need a start switch located on the motor To replace this you will need to get the 2 screws off where the harness plugs into the motor MAKE SURE THE POWER IS OFF :) Ask you locat parts placeGood luck:)
Hold both the blue Fn and the green Call buttons for a couple of seconds, and, then, press the reset pin with the stylus pen. When you release the buttons, a screen will come up asking for confirmation. The hard reset will start only after you confirm the procedure, by tapping on hte left softkey.
