its one of two things. There is a driver conflict, which means the driver that was associated with the device was not the right one, so as a solution, update the driver in device manager but make sure you have the proper one... OR the sound device hardware itself is not being recognized by the system. Isolate it by removing all peripherals... and check device manager again. It should appear under sound,video controller.

945GCT - HM motherboard, SPDIF out?

Hi, Before doing anything please refer the motherboard manual, and as per my knowledge you need not solder any pin on the board, if you do so may be something else might not work. I better suggest you to check the Manual before doing anything.
