I replaced my toshiba tecra m2v-s310 40GB PATA hard drive with a Samsung Spinpoint 160HC M5 (160 GB). after i power on and enter password, i get: "IDE # 1 Error", then "Intel Boot Agent initializing link...." then "media error: check cable". the hard drive is not recognized by the BIOS (acpi version 1.3). any help would be appreciated. reason for replacement: was making lots of noise and would give me a blue screen without booting up completely.

joecoolvette and
lreed_2006thank you for taking the time to look into this. I finally solved the problem by returning the harddrive and getting another one. Not sure that was entirely the problem but it now works. As to how i booted the computer, i used an OS CD. I guess that after 5 years it was time for the drive to go.
What I have not been able to do is recover the data. Bought a cable (USB -IDE/SATA) and try to look into the hard drive but it does not allow me to do that. Ironically I was able to recover someone else's data from another crashed hard drive. If you have any ideas about this, let me know (dont want to spend too much $$$$ though)
At the risk of insulting your intelligence, (I'm here to help), I need to ask a few questions for clarity of your question.
1.How did you install the harddrive? Your old harddrive has an Operating System on it. Windows XP and Windows Vista, are examples of an O/S.
If you didn't set up your laptop to transfer it's O/S over to a new harddrive, you have NO Operating System on the new harddrive. No O/S, No computer.
Some laptops have this option built in. You press a Function key, (F10, F11 are examples), and click on the option.
Some laptops Do Not. You have to install a Restoration Disk, and many laptops do not come with this. You have to order it from the laptop manufacturer.
2.Is the new harddrive formatted and ready to go? What do the instructions provided with the harddrive state?
are you 100% sure the blue screen what caused by hard drive failure?
