Hello, Mrscookie58 -

First you need to have your printer-scanner connected to your computer, either a physical connection via cable or via a WiFi connection.

Then, you need make sure the software for the HP OfficeJet J6480 is installed on your computer.

I hope you have consulted the Getting Started Guide for OfficeJet J6480. If you do not have that guide, you will find the link to download and save it here:
https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-officejet-j6400-all-in-one-printer-series/3635376/model/3635377/manuals
It is the Wireless Getting Started Guide, which is a PDF document, which means you will need Adobe Reader software (free). Once you download the guide, I recommend you save it to your Documents folder to a folder you have established and named HP OfficeJet J6480. You should name the file for the Getting Started Guide something you can find easily - something like: Getting Started.

If you don't have your scanner as an icon and shortcut on your computer desktop, this YouTube video will prove instructive:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOZsDm41XOE
Plus, this video can give you some visual instruction on scanning.

I also hope you have read through the user guide for your HP OfficeJet J6480. If you do not have the user guide, you will find the link to the full user guide on the web page cited above. That guide is also a PDF document.

Instructions for scanning begin on Page 42 of the guide. With my printer-scanner (not an HP product), after placing the document I want to scan on the printer-scanner glass and closing the cover, I like to manage the scanning operation from my computer and the scanner device control window. That way, I can easily choose if I want to save the scanned document as a PDF or JPEG or something else. Plus, I can easily save the scanned document to a file I name so that I can easily locate it again.

This YouTube video may also prove instructive:

Note: If all this seems confusing, I think you probably can benefit from one-on-one in-person help. Since you state your children are not available to help you, perhaps a neighbor or friend can help or perhaps a child (I suggest over the age of 12) of a neighbor or friend can be asked to help. Whomever would help you, I suggest they _slowly_ talk you through the processes, having you perform the steps, so that you will have a better idea of what needs to be done. Remind your instructor to GO SLOWLY. :) I have provided one-on-one assistance to not only my husband, but friends of my mother. Each time, I use a pencil as a pointer, sit next to the person I'm helping, and point to the computer screen stating what steps need to be followed, and work through the steps slowly.

Added: I forgot to state that you will need to be connected to the Internet with your computer and printer-scanner.

Best wishes.

This particular error message is in regards with the software of the printer. Its either your printer is not communicating with the computer software for scanning or your firewall is blocking the software. SOURCE: Officejet J6480 has scanner failure

sometimes cleaning the scanner glass plate would fix this issue.

turn of the printer.

wipe the scanner glass flat form with with a cleaning wipes or a plain water and a tissue (just a little water in the tissue). make sure the glass is clean with dirt and dust.

turn on printer.

hope this helps, please rate.

My mother board had to be replaced on my pc that

I always use HP printers and every time i get a new operating system (vista, win7 etc) the HP software does not fully install. I go to HP.com to install the latest software for the appropriate OS but rarely get more than just the printer working. If i require the scanner or cd print features i have to do that from an older computer or older operating system that the printer was originally installed on.

Officejet J6480 won't scan. It indicates no

If you have the cd installer for your printer, try to install the driver for scanner... don't forget to disable first the connection of your printer from your computer when installing the driver...

If you don't know the location of the driver, try browsing first the cd installer..

Officejet j6480 gives error msg scanner failure cannot copy, scan but will print from the computer

On the top of the scanner mechanism, there is a black tab that gets caught on the underside of the scanner surface, just beyond the glass, towards you. You will hear a gear grinding sound, that"s the tab getting caught. either bend the tab down, or remove it. Its on the black cover that"s on top of the scanner mechanism. Also remove any tape that is on the bottom of the trailing cable under the scanner that prevents it from moving all the way to the left.
