You won't see an HD program unless the actual show is being broadcast in HD. All of the channels are up in the 500's where I live and say "HD" in front of the stations regular initials (Time Warner). Be advised there are only about 15 of them altogether. Very disappointing. I too was disappointed with the low quality of some of the broadcasts, especially if they are old movies etc. I can actual see the digital squares. That's a sign of a poor signal. Along with the mouth movements are not in sync with the voice. Thank the US government for digital.

Top and bottom of the screen are cut off

That set has an aspect ratio of 4:3. The problem is that what you are sending to it is 16:9 So you are sending an hd signal to a non HD television. The tuner is NTSC which is not HD. Theres not much that you can do about this.

How do I know if HD is turned on My husband doesn't think the pic is in HD when on an HD channel?

Click Info button on remote. Information on screen will say resolution. If station is broadcasting in High Definition, information on screen will say 1080p. If you have cable, you will have to set cable box to HD.

I turn on the Tv the sound comes on & the picture is blank Cablevision was here & said it's a problem in the set

He is probably not an expert (just kidding, of course he's not..) First, try connecting the Cablevision Box to another TV (if you don't have another HD TV, use the yellow/white/red Composite connection.) If there is still no picture, the box is no good. If there is, then try a different output from the Box or other inputs on the TV. Are you using HDMI (HD connection) out of your Box? Is the TV 720p or 1080p? Set the Box up (from the menu) according to the specs of your TV. Hope I helped.

LC-26DA5U 26 in. HDTV-Ready LCD Television: i connect a hdmi cable 2 my hd cable box - the pic...

The cable box needs to be set to send different signals when using hd tv and standard tv. Usually a good setting would be 720p in hd and 480p in standard. The tv is working fine it is the cable box sending the signal. If you have another hdmi source such as a dvd player you may hook that up to show the tv is working just fine.

Our Samsung plasma keeps cutting out when watching a program that is not on HD... The resolution 720x480 @60mghz. What Do I need to do to stop this from happening

Best option is to switch from the HDMI to component input. This is an HDMI compatibility problem between your TV and cable box. You will still be HD but you won't have the blinking out issue. I hope this was of some assistance, best wishes.

Is tv an HD tv

Yes, mostly all new displays are at least 720p which display a great picture ! However, coax cable is the worst possible cable you can use. Your best bet for HD from the cable box is to use component cable. These are the 3 RCA type colored cables, red, green and blue. You will also need another two RCA cables for the audio, which is usually red/black or red/white. If you have a surround sound receiver, then you will not need the 2 for audio to the TV. These 2 would goto the receiver or you can use a better digital coax or optical cable for audio.
Also, HDMI from the cable box to display is a more expensive cable which will give you HD but doesn't always look better then component on some HD cable boxes.
