I own a 1996 Craftsman 19HP Riding mower (42") 6-speed that runs for awhile then when warm starts to cut out. The only way I can keep the engine (B&S Twin) running is to have it on full or almost full choke.... else it sputters and stalls.
What I have done: 1. new spark plugs 2. new fuel line ffrom carb to fuel filter. 3. cleaned/blown out fuel filter.. seems OK..... 4. replaced vacuum line from engine to carb.... I can feel the air puff with engine running and line off. The gas seems to be clean.. I am careful when refilling to not let any debris into the tank. I am wondering if a new filter will remedy the problem or is it possible for something lodged in the tank outlet. I'd like to remove the tank and inspect it but it looks like a nasty job for a by mechanic. Thanks for any input... I shall follow this thread. Dave.
Hi Dave, it sounds crazy, but try this. Check your gas cap. It could be clogged, causing a vacuum to occur in the tank, and therefore not allowing the carb. to take on gas. It usually take 10-15 min. for this to occur. The next time you run the mower and it starts to stall out, loosen the gas cap and see if it begins to run again. If it does, then you know that the gas cap is clogged.

Longhorn... it's a 19HP Briggs&Stratton ( I thought I put that in my post).. the tractor model # is 944.609190 if that helps. The engine is a Twin cylinder with turbo cooling. Let me know if that helps you...thx..Dave
OK Dwain.. I've since put it back in the shed and it's dark so I'll get that info for you in the AM. Appreciate your response... Dave
Dwain.. try this... Eng Model # 42E707 Type: 2631-E1.. (found this info in my manual).
tried that.... no diff.. I think now it's carb cleaning time... will update when done (Sunday).
Well, none of that really helped. That doesn't show to be a good model #. What I really need is the model # on the ENGINE. If it's not on the top of the engine on a little metal plate, then it's above the left spark plug. It will have Model-Type-Code, three sets of numbers. The model number of the mower doesn't help when you're dealing with the engine. The mower and the engine are made by two different companies and have different model #'s for each. Dwain
What is the model # on your ENGINE? There are several types of 19hp engines and it would help to know the model #. I assume this is a Briggs and Stratton?
