When i plug a usb device such as an external hard drive or a card reader into any of the 8 usb ports i get a mesage saying i should use a usb 2.0 port for faster data transfers. To my knowledge they all are 2.0 or at least the ones on the front of the tower, right? I have tried activating from bios as suggested but i cant find the option in there. any help would be appreciated.
Do a firmware update.
Sounds not, some of the older systems only have 1.1, Usb 2 is not all that old (about 2-3 years).
you can upgrade to USB2 bu adding a USB2 PCI card to your system, this would give you some ports on the back and it may be possible to link the ports on the front to the new PCI card to upgrade those as well (depending on how they are connected to the mobo)
you can get USB2 cards with a Pin header which would allow for a pin block connection.
Hmmm, the spec does seem to state that USB2 are used,
Have you reinstalled your PC at all? it is possible that you have not re-installed the chipset drivers completely which includes the USB2 controller, in which case it would all be running at 1.1.
You can Identify the chipset using thi Intel utility (as this is an intel box)

Then you can get the appropriate updated drivers for your chipset from the same page (links at the bottom of the page)
