I have two similar camera models, coolpix 300 and coolpix 310. The 310 randomly stopped connecting to the computer thru the USB cord/cable. The cord works with the 300, which connects and downloads pictures just fine. I re-installed the software, called the company, but they don't know why it won't work. I have windows 7. I have tried everything I know but nothing seems to work. I eventually will get a memory card and transfer them that way, but I would like this fixed too.
If the cable is working fine then check the port on both camera and PC. on the camera maybe there's some dirt or lint stuck on the port try to clean it. On the PC might wanna try other ports usually the one at the back is recommended.

Please see the following blog article, as it describes the use of an inexpensive card reader as a much easier, faster, and less error prone way to download your photos. In fact there are several important reasons discussed in the article for using a card reader vice downloading from the camera. USB Card readers are also very inexpensive these day, with cost virtually not an issue:

ok I figured out how to do it! put the memory card into the camera, then go to view the pictures. Then press the menu button and scroll until you see the copy button. Then you will see the option to copy from camera to card, or card to camera. Press the option to copy from camera to card and press select all....(or whichever pictures you want copied...I wanted all pictures copied). Then voila! it takes a few seconds to copy from the camera to the card, and there you have it! :)

If you can get the pics using a card reader, why are you insisting on using the camera and USB cord? Pros always use a card reader.

Alright..... I had this same problem and I finally figured it out. If your pictures are saved onto the card, then the USB cord will not detect them. If you want to transfer pics via the USB cable, make sure they are saved to your camera. You can copy photos from your card to camera vice versa under your menu settings.
Also, your card CANNOT be plugged into your camera or it will not see anything. I guess the card confuses the camera. Seems really stupid on Nikon's part.
Your camera only has a limited amount of memory, so if you will be limited on how many photos you can save to your camera.
Do this, and it will work.
