SOURCE: I'm trying to start Microsoft Windows Server2003 from USB Hard Drive on Dell PowerEdge 2600 Server.

Dell provides lifetime tech support for all PE servers. Call them at 800-945-3355 and give them the service tag or express service code from the server. If it can be done, they will tell you how.
Good luck!

What type of nic to add

Cannot be PCIe, as they are not supported - PCI or PCI-X. Check the slots, you may only be able to use 3.3/5V cards.

And as a sidenote ... the PowerEdge 2600 does not support x64 Operating Systems and does not support hardware-assisted virtualization (VT on Intel processors), so you will be limited on which VM solutions you can use.

Drive Options with a Dell Poweredge 2600

I would definitively not recommend to remove the backplates, unless you want to ask for serious trouble with your system.

I would install a PCI SATA adapter card (one like these) and connect your SATA drives to it.

DELL Poweredge 2600

The Dell original standard CD drive shipped with the PE2600 is incapable of 'understanding' the latest generation of bootable CD's (no matter what the BIOS says).

As far as I can tell, it's not fixable in the firmware ..

However you can swap it out for a more modern drive - such as the TS-L462C (which is a plug in replacement combined DVD reader / CD reader/writer - and Dell post the required drivers on their PE 2600 web pages, so I assume it must be a 'supported' solution)

Problem with creating array

The Perc RAID controller in a 2600 doesn't support RAID 4.
You can do RAID 0, RAID 1 and RAID 5.

With 3 HDD's your best bet would be a RAID 5.

Mirroring is RAID 1 (which would only use 2 of the drives)

PowerEdge 2600 does not boot up ?

you need to set the boot device order. Usually F12.
or you can go to bios with F2 or F10.

your cd-rom is wrong you need the Instalation and Server Management CD. I think it's possible to download this cd at their site.

good luck
