Problem solved. I was doing the scan using the buttons on the copier/scanner, but you cannot set the scan size this way. You have to use the ScanSoft Paperport program on the computer.

I am still trying to scan 11x17 and I sent it up in control center but still not working right it scans 8.5x11

CHANGE CONTROLCENTER CONFIGURATION

1. Open ControlCenter. START -> (ALL) PROGRAMS -> BROTHER -> XXX-XXXX (Model of machine) -> CONTROLCENTER. An icon will appear in the system tray by the clock. You may have to click this icon to launch the program.

2. Click CONFIGURATION -> SCAN -> FILE (or any other scanning option youare using)

3. Under Software Button, change Document Size to LEDGER 11 x 17 in.

4. Under Device Button, change Document Size to LEDGER 11 x 17 in.

5. Click OK

6. Place document on the Brother machine.

7. To initiate the scan, left click on FILE (or any other scanning option you selected in step 1). This issue should now be resolved.

Scanner not scanning right. scans in sections. i need to scan a standard size sheet of paper and it scans it in peices. how do i get it to scan this document correctly

You need to set the scanner to scan a standard size paper (letter or A4) in the Scan Settings dialog. To get there, from the MP Navigator select "Scan Photo/Document", then on the lower left side of the preview area click on the "Specify. ." button. Your Document Size is probably set at "Auto Detect (Multiple Documents)". Change this to the size document you are scanning and click "OK". Now you can preview and scan and not have segmented images.

Cannot scan legal size documents. The scan goes through but it will only scan the letter size portion of the document and drops the rest of the text.

You likely need to install the Brother Scanner Resolution Improvement Tool. The description of the download states:

"This tool will expand the maximum scanning resolution capability and allow you to scan legal size documents."

Here is a link for the Windows Vista download

Letter size document scans as legal size document

This is software setting issue. Just check your settings, if a 'default' button is available in the software, press it and then select your required settings. Some softwares dont accept the new settings unless the 'default' is pressed.

Scan letter

Most scanners in my experience do not scan to "precisely" 8 1/2 X 11 inch letter size (assuming that was the original paper size).

A workaround is possible with some graphic programs. After importing the original incorrect scan of the document into the software a combination of resizing and/or cropping (depending on how your program works) will allow getting the exact dimensions. Then save as a new image document. Make sure to adjust for sufficient resolution (a larger document) if you plan to reprint.

We have a canon MP610 printer scanner combo, I work in a dentist office and am trying to scan a x-ray. When I do it is'nt picking up the detail very well at all. I think I need to adjust the settings but I...

the only way to get a little more detail out of this printer with x-rays is to INCREASE the DPI resolution. there are no other adjustments that are abailable.
The Scan Settings dialog box opens when you click Specify... on the Scan/Import Documents or images screen.
The Scan Settings dialog box allows you to specify advanced settings for scanning.

Document Type
Select the type of document to be scanned. To scan photographs, select either Color Photo or Black and White Photo. To scan text documents, select either Color Document, Black and White Document, or Text(OCR). To scan magazines, select Magazine(Color).
Document Size
Select the size of document to be scanned.
Auto Detect: Detects document size automatically.
Auto Detect(Multiple Documents): Select this when scanning multiple documents at one time.
Select Stitch-assist to scan the left and right halves of a document separately and combine them back into one image.
Reference See the section below for details.
Scanning images Larger than the Platen (Stitch Assist)
When you select Custom, a dialog box in which you can specify the document size opens. Select a Unit, then enter the Width and Height and click OK.

Important When you select Auto Detect the position or size of the image may not be scanned correctly depending on the document. In such a case, specify the document size, such as A4 or Letter according to the document to be scanned, and align a corner of the document with the corner at the arrow of the platen.
When you select Auto Detect(Multiple Documents) allow 3/8 inches (1 cm) or more space between the edges of the platen and the document.
If not, some images may not be scanned at the correct positions and sizes.
You cannot select Auto Detect(Multiple Documents) or Auto Detect when Document Type is Text(OCR).
Scanning Resolution<<<<-------------------------------------------------------------<<<<<<<<<<
Select the resolution at which to scan documents. The following scanning resolution can be specified:
Text(OCR): 300dpi, 400dpi
Others: 75dpi, 100dpi, 150dpi, 200dpi, 300dpi, 400dpi, 600dpi
The higher the resolution (value), the more detail in your image; the lower the resolution (value), the less detail. At high resolution, scanning takes longer and file size becomes larger than usual. See the section below for details on resolution.
this should answer your question , feel free to post here agian if you need more help.
Regards, and thank you for using fixya.

Won't recognize legal size paper

I have a Brother MFC-8840Dn (full legal-size flatbed as well as document feeder). I use Windows XP Pro and a USB connection. I'm not sure my fix works with other Brother models or different Windows operating systems, but it's a way to start troubleshooting at least.

I've always been able to print legal-sized pages from word processing or spreadsheet programs and receive legal-sized faxes. But I never could make legal-sized photocopies or PDF scans. The image was always cut off at Letter size. The fix is a Brother Utility set-up setting:

*** Go to Start / All Programs / Brother / MFL-Pro Suite MFC 8840Dn / Scanner Utility. (This link may also be called something like Scanner Settings.)
*** At the "Maximum Scanning Size", select "Legal" instead of "Letter/A4".
*** Click OK and restart your PC for the new setting to take effect.

It's like magic -- I can now scan a full legal-sized PDF, whether on the flatbed or through the ADF. I also tried a compressed TIFF scan and it came out fine.

**** Make sure your software and/or Brother Control Center scanning configurations are set to Legal if that's what you want for the particular image scan. The Brother Utility setting simply enables the option of choosing the larger legal-sized paper, which then allows the full legal-sized image scan, You always have to set your software to make that choice, just as you would to make and print smaller images on Letter, A4, envelopes, etc. (NOTE: I always start scans through software on my PC, like Adobe Acrobat or PaperPort, and the Utility Setting fix is working fine. However, I just tried pressing the SCAN button on the front panel of the MFC itself with a legal-sized document on the flatbed and through the document feeder. I still got Letter-sized image scans. So, there must be another setting somewhere for starting scans directly from the MFC that I'll locate later.)

I was about to buy a different brand of scanner because of the frustration with legal-sized images. It's like having a new scanner now :) I hope this Utility Setting info helps you troubleshoot your legal-sized image problem.
