You can overinflate your tires by a few psi over standard, not use AC, avoid stop and go driving and jack rabbit starts, remove unnecessary heavy objects from car, keep max speed around 55, proper oil level, no brakes dragging, anticipate stops and let off gas, etc.
KIBIR...CHECK YOUR OIL FIRST TO SEE IF LOW. Add oil ASAP. get help if you do not know how to check oil. Instructions in owners manual. A friend thought the oil light coming on meant change oil...it was down 3 quarts!!!! It means you are low on oil. You could be damaging motor!!!
The Check Engine light is telling you what the problem is. Go to an O'Reily's and have it read. The odds are good that it is running in "Limp Home" mode because of the loss of a signal from some sensor, the most likely being the oxygen sensor. Run it like that for very long, and you'll ruin the catalytic converter, too.
Most common problem is the IAC(Idle Air Control) valve. But if you say some times work I will suspect the throttle is clogged. Remove the Air hose, apply full throttle and hold, spray carburetor cleaner on clot using thin long nose player clean inside wall and throttle. don't spray directly inside because the carb cleaner is to aggressive for some of the gasket.
Good Luck

Have a fault scan done (OBII scan) It sounds like a TPS (Throttle Positioning Switch) or Cranksahft trigger but have scan done ti verify instead of throwing parts at it. Any good parts store (Autozone, Advance, etc..) do the scans FREE
The throttle positioning sensor may have a inconsistant contact in a certain range. Generally caused by aggressive driving., seriously the pivots and other moving parts wear sooner because of indirect pressures at the throttle body.
I'd have a free scan at parts store for any trouble codes first , just in case, if no codes come up then I'd consider a new cap & wire set. One of , or the most common problem with hard start in wet/damp weather is plug wires & cap, especially if they haven't been changed that you know of since new.
