This not a good sign, from your description it indicates the high voltage transformer is shorted possibily caused by the magnetron becoming defective. The money would be better spent replacing the microwave oven, the repairs to the present unit will be close or exceed the cost of a new one.

Sounds like the magnetron just shorted out. Its the part the generates the microwaves that heat the food. Buzzing sounds are a symptom of a shorted mag. Usually not worth fixing since the magnetron costs almost as much as a new oven. Sorry.

the problem is in the magnetron try to replace it.

You may have a control board issue. Thank God for safety switches.
This is a problem that an integrated circuit tech. can repair, but it may be costly.
Decide how much you want to put into this oven vs. buying a new one.

I have a GE counter top microwave oven. When the oven starts cooking (the magnetron turns on) the oven makes a harsh buzzing noise. What is wrong and what should be done?

This is not safe. If the fan is not running, the magnetron will quickly overheat and be destroyed. We answered this in more depth in the other place you asked it.

I was going to suggest the low voltage transformer, but when you said it sounded like it was coming from the left side, that seemed odd. I have a stock transformer here I keep for test that is loud, but it works. Odd, eh?
