Most PCs will not boot usb, unless the CMOS setup configure supports that device as a boot choice on cold start. F10 or does allow whatever key strokes needed before windows logo, will get you into CMOS config. Then look for boot, sequence and see if the usb is an option, if not, no hope for usb boot.
If CMOS config does allow usb boot AND your usb device has been set up to be a boot device,(and you saved the cmos changes) with the proper files...
shut dow, put in usb and cold start.... save

Hi I have the same problem - when I turn on my compaq nc 6230 it says "1781 Disk 1failure ", I click enter button and it's starts to boot windows xp and works good without any poblems. I took the HDD out and install into different nc6230 and it works good and no any erro "1781 Disk 1 failure" at all - so it's NOT an HDD problem ! Can somebody help to troubleshoot ! Thanks.

unplug the internal battery for 5 minutes, then reboot with power battery out (only on mains). It is documented in the manual.

You may want to try to work through the troubleshooting advice given on the HP support site, available here and here., and possibly here.
Check the forum postings here.
And consider running chkdsk c: /f or /r to check the integrity of your hard drive, if you can get windows up and running. Instructions for that here and here.
Otherwise, please try to give us a bit more info, such as the exact error message, what you were attempting to do when it reported that error, what OS you're using, etc.
If it's not booting, see this list and choose the most likely to troubleshoot your startup problem.
I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!
