Trying to install a fan motor for my outside ac unit replacement motor has 5 wires on it. my old on had only 3 driving me nuts

You have bad capacitor on your unit it may not look bad but chances are it is just get the microfarad rateing of the side of the cap. should be like 55.5 55 7.5 something like that. Also check your fan motor. last. I have changed hundreds of caps this year. Russ

Your 3 phase unit should not have a capacitor. I'm guessing it's single phase. If it's a single capacitor than the compressor should not be going to it also. To test the motor, common to start plus common to run should equal the ohms you get between start and run. For instance, 1.2 ohms+ 2.2 ohms= 3.4 ohms. Follow the wiring diagram on the inside of the door, send model number!!

Hi, the numbers you have listed do not tell me anything of value. If this is a condenser fan motor outside your home, and you are installing a unit with 5 wires in place of one with 3, one of the wires from the old motor goes to the run capacitor on the F terminal. The new motor should have 2 brown wires, one with a white stripe on it. Take one of the brown wires doesn't matter which one, and tape the end up. You will not use it. Take the other brown wire and plug it on the run capacitor where you removed the other wire on the fan terminal. The 3 wires you have left, 2 are for your 220volt hot leads to run the motor.Look on your new motors data plate, and it will show you what 2 wires are L-1 and L-2. They will plug where you removed the other 2 wires from your 3 wire motor. The remaining wire you will tape off also. Very easy to do. Just follow what I said, and look for L-1 and L-2 on the new motor, and use those wires where you remove the 2 on the old motor. If its done right, and the voltage is right, you should be up and running.

this soounnds as though it for a 2 spped fan motor look at the old motor and see the RPM and then look at the new motor plate it shuld show ou which wire is for the speed required. Hope this helps ..Jon

It sounds like you fan motor has went bad. Turn off the power to the unit. Then remove the apx 5 screws on the outside edge holding the fan shield on top of the unit. When you lift up on this the fan will come out with it. You will need to cut the wires to the fan motor within 3 inches of the motor. Make sure to trace these wires they will be color coded but they fade where they are exsposed to the sun. Now take the screws loose in the center of the fan shield these hold the fan in place or it will have a clamp that holds the motor with a single nut. Most of the time the hardest part is removing the fan blade. Soak the nut and shaft with PB blaster, WD 40 or some other good penitrating oil. Let the oil do its job and then try to unscrew the screws holding the fan to the fan shaft. These screws will either be allen wrench type or an exsposed square drive nut. If there is rust on the shaft sand it off before trying to remove the fan. Once the fan is off (make sure you lable the fan so you know how it goes back on you dont want to put it on upside down) you can take it to a local electric motor repair shop and they will match it up for you or order one on line ect... They can use the mdl numbers on the fan to replace it. Remember to unhook the electricity before starting and when you put the fan back in use electric wire **** connectors you can get a kit from any hardware store or use twist caps and always tape the wires where you put them back together. You will have extra wire you can trim it or just tape it or zip tie it so it doesn't get caught in the fan. Your new motor will have a wiring diagram on it. Write it down because once mounted you will not be able to see it. The only difference may be that your new motor may have two brown wires that go to your capacitor. On your old motor you may have had only one. If this is the case unplug the old wires from the capacitor and remove them one of them will go to your old motor and the other to power. On your new motor the power goes to the motor and it supplies power to the capacitor its self. I hope this helps

it possible to replace the defective as follow:
1- take out the unit
2- remove the top cover
3- try to take out the wires from there connections and note each color to witch connection
4- loose bolt of indoor blower to the shaft
5- open the bolt of the condenser fan to the other end of motor shaft and take out the fan
6- open the fixation nuts or bolts of the motor then slide it outside.
7 replace as take care about witch side of shaft is for blower or fan.

Motor, wiring and/or capacitor. If the sticker on the side of the motor isn't burned off you can get the motor info off that. Model numbers from the motor do little for locating the motor but my help. Best thing to do is get the AC motor specs and look up online (cheapest) or go to a motor shop. The specs you need would be as follows.
Horsepower-Such as 1/4 or 1/3
Voltage-Most likely 240/1 (240vac single phase)
Rotation-CW/CCW looking at the shaft end of the motor
Amps
Frame size

check connections tightness or if you just change the connector will solve the problem that is if the motor has not burn out yet
