PROBLEM 1) I was touching my touch sensitive buttons and sound went off... and I have tried the mute, doesn't help... tried volume up, doesn't help... sound doesn't respond at all to anything... yet data says it is working... so, help, please, I am too ignorant and inept... PROBLEM 2) Worse... my 1537 no longer recognizes my dvd internal driver nor my external driver... shows in DEVICE MANAGER, does NOT show in My Computer... tried to troubleshoot, follow instructions, nothing! HELP! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
If the computer is over 2 years old replace the harddrive with a SSD and reinstall windows

Not sure I understand you what you mean. Let me recap:
1) Your LAN adaptor was working before you reloaded Windows XP Pro.
2) Now it’s not showing up in “Device Manager”.
If this is the case, there must be some software driver missing. Make sure there are no other devices that have an error. Double check Dell’s website at www.support.dell.com and select "I'm looking for drivers and downloads". If you don't have the proper version of Adobe you will be prompted to install it. Once installed return to "drivers and downloads" and enter the "service tag", (serial number) of the laptop. Dell keeps a listing of drivers for every customer's computer they sell.

Go to Sound options in control panel. Change the volume and try choosing a different sound device.

If your touch pad doesn't work too, there is a connector under the keyboard that affects both the sound and touch pad. It may have come disconnected.

Not to sound silly but did you check the volume on your computer device, did you make sure the mute buttun wasn't on

I have had the same problem and error code.
It started as an intermitant fault and then just stopped working.
You can try going into device manager and uninstalling the dvd drive, it will automatically reinstall.
