No Cooling in the Fridge section, freezer is icing

I have Westinghouse Freestyle BJ504Q-R Upside Down Refrigrator. It's been working fine for the last 9 years or so but stopped cooling in the Refrigrator section two weeks ago. An A/C Technician offered assitance and tried to diagnose the problem. It was found that the Compressor wa working fine, Fan was working too, Defrost Heater worked too when engaged manually. He decided to replace the Defrost sensor and the timer. But that did not help. The freezer section started gathering ice and the fridge would not cool at all or very little (16-8 C). He then replaced the thermostat, but that did not make any difference. Another thing we noticed was that when we opened the freezer door, cool air would start to come into the fridge section but would stop if the freezer door was closed. This seems to suggest that the fan is not blowing cool air into the fridge section, as a result the thermostat is not stopping the compressor and hence icing in the freezer section.Having already spent quite a bit on parts, any advice to fix it cheaply would be appreciated. Else it's time for a new fridge.

I was unable to find any adjusting device. Is there a possibility for the fan to be working in reverse? And how about the fact that air starts going into the fridge section when the freezer door is open?

Unblock the ice or obstruction to the drain pipe from the freezer to the top of the compressor. make sure the little metal thing is over the heater element and hanging in the drain hole so it heats when the defrost element comes on.

Generally on these models they rely on cold air being pumped fr\om the freezer to the fridge and have a adjusting device to control the flow, you need to locate and check this is free and working properly. Another reason for freezer ice up is a shortage of gas in the unit, this is usually unfixable as the leak can rarely be found as it usually occurs within the cabinet case. Sorry to say it would then be a throw away.

Fridge not cooling, Freezer is working (upside down fridge/freezer)

We experienced a smilar problem with your Fisher & Paykle fridge/freezer.
The fan that sends cold air to the Fridge section of the appliance didnt appear to be working leaving the Fridge poorly cooled.
I suggest the first step is to turn the fridge off and leave it to totally defrost.
Build up in ice in the freezer section seemed to have an impact on the proper operation of the fan which seems to relie on a thermostat for its operation.
Having defrosted and cleaned the fridge the problem was solved.
The fans have a delay before switching on after the door is closed. Place a magnet over the door sensor switch and wait to see if the fan works.
The problem could be that the unit has iced over itself over a period of time and defrosting it could solve the problem.

If you cleaned it of all frost and ice and it keeps doing this then perhaps the defrost thermostat is detached from where it should be or shutting off too early. Try replacing it if is attached well.

Freezer works no refrigrator

most common fault to cause this problem is cooling element in freezer section iced up. could also be faulty fridge stat not letting cold air through.first pull drawers out of freezer section, if back cover inside feels frosty or snowy, then likely evap (cooling element) is iced up.if so empty cab, switch off for 24 hours with both doors open, and restart. ice ups can be the result of the freezer door being left ajar, but can also be a problem with auto defrost as well as problem in refrigeration circuit. if problem comes back call a service engineer.

Top half fridge not cold freezer department fine

I had the same problem; the top fridge compartment was warming up to 14C while the freezer compartment was starting to defrost (frozen stuff was starting to become soft. I took the rear wall off the freezer compartment and found it all iced up. I defrosted it with a blower heater then powered it back up. It all worked fine for a month when the same thing happened. I figured that the defrost cycle wasn't working. I located the defrost timer on the rear right-side of the fridge. I rotated it several times and found that the fridge was turning on and off. I rotated it until the fridge turned off. I waited 5 minutes then stuck my head into the freezer compartment and felt the rear wall at the bottom where he drain is; it felt warm so I guessed the defrost heater element was ok. I ordered a defrost timer and installed it. I haven't had a problem since.
