My Maytag SDG305DAWW gas dryer stopped working consistently today. I took off the lower front panel and cleaned out the lint. About 1/5 times, when I start it, the ignition element heats up, the gas flows, and the dryer heats normally. 4/5 times, the ignition element heats up, but then I hear a strange rattle/clicky sound, (which I assume is something related to the gas not starting to flow), and then the ignition stops glowing. The drum continues to spin, but no gas/heat. Every few minutes, it tries again to light, but usually the same thing. Reading online, it looks like it could be the little electric coils...but why would I hear that rattle/click sound?

The problem you are describing is usually associated with a bad gas valve coil. The dryer runs normally until it gets hot, then starts making a strange clicking noise. After it cools down, the dryer runs normally again. The gas valve coils (there are two of them) usually run about $20 a piece. I recommend replacing both of them at the same time just to be sure. I hope this helps.

Hello there :
what you are going to want to do is to troubleshoot the heating circuit
if you have a multimeter
there is a thermal Cut-Out switch that is connected to the heater box.) -simply unplug wires
and take reading from the end connetors
your reading should be 0 ohms. and nothing else
Next check
a part called the Hi-Limit
Thermostat that is connected to the heater box, it should be located closest to the heating element wire leads unplug the wires and take the reading across the 2 wire connections . this should give you a reading of 0 ohms and nothing else.
Now if any of these 2 parts are not in this range they need to be replaced and i would recommend that you replace them as a set cause if one usually goes out then the other one will soon follow ok
I hope this is very helpful for you
Best regards Michael

Good day,
An ohm reading on the coils for the gas valve will give readings, that will be of little value.
If it runs and fires properly from cold, and then will not refire, replace the coils on the gas valve. A very common problem.
