SOURCE: picture problem

I contacted samsung today after finding out this was a frequent problem with this model camera and they told me they area ware of the problem and offered to fix it for free or send me a refurbished one for free. I opted to have them fix mine.. They said they are sending me a shipping label that I should receive by Monday. It will take them 7-14 business days to fix and they will send it back. It might be worth a try caling them. (I bought my camera in 2003 and I guess the camera's made close to that date had a malfunction that they will fix even though the warranty is expired.

SOURCE: Shutter dosen't open, Black Screen while recording

there is a couple other posts on Fixya regarding this issue, the CCD sensor going bad and resulting in no image. i have the same issue and i just stumbled on the (yet to be verified) solution. www.samsungclassaction.com. if the settlement is legitimate then Samsung will repair for free! (and refunds for people who already paid Samsung for repairs). the site asks for contact info but i worry about scams so i'm going to contact Samsung directly.

i hope this is real!

Black screen in shoot mode

The most common cause of this is a failed image sensor. Usually the playback mode will let you view pictures taken before the issue happened just fine and you will also be able to view the menu system just fine. When viewing the screen in an image taking mode, however, there is typically discolorations, horizontal or vertical lines, image bluring or distortions, or simply a black screen.

This situation, if caused by the image sensor, has to serviced and cannot be fixed by the user. If you are within your one year warranty and no user damage has been done to the camera, the camera will be fixed at no charge. If beyond the 12 month period however the customer may opt to have the unit repaired at a cost or take advantage of the Canon Loyalty Program and upgrade to refurbished S3 IS at an alternate discounted price.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,
HeavyDLB

Recording

This sounds like the CCD sensor is faulty ( this is the device that generates picture in both v-cams and normal digital cameras and sits behind the lens ). Playback is fine but no image ( or very 'noisy' image ) in capture mode. Easy to repair but one has to put a new CCD block in.

Black bars in the picture

For Models: CC4352, CC4362, CC4393. Your camcorder has a wide format recording mode that lets you make recordings compatible with the 16x9 format. When 16x9 is activated, the camcorder records black bars at the top and bottom of the picture to produce the wide-screen (movie) effect. This is also known as "letterbox" recording. Do not use this mode unless you have a compatible 16x9 TV. When played on a regular TV, black bars appear on the screen. If the 16x9 feature is activated on your camcorder and you want to turn it off, press REC/PAUSE to pause recording, and repeatedly press DIGITAL EFFECTS until no digital effects display appears.
