I have a scratch on the screen.I noticed it is a two piece screen.I'm sure the lenticular screen is behind the screen in front. My question is"Is the front screen a protective screen of plexiglass or is it some type of fresnel screen?

now this works sometimes. use t-cut as you would for a car make sure the tv is cold and rub it in slowly going round in a circle across the scratch. DONT push hard onto the screen. clean off when it is dry. then use some lcd screen cleaner and the scratches should not be noticable now.
liquid is never good on those screens- there are 3 layers to the screen, from inside out, a fresnel screen (etched circle pattern), a lenticular screen (ridge lines top to bottom), and a protective screen ( "Diamond Shield" tinted plexiglass).
the fluid will wick up btween these layers, turn black, then very very slowly recede leaving a waterline mark. It can take months for it to become un-noticeable.
cleaning is possible, but beware, any type of cleaning fluid or spray is going to simulate the exact same problem but to a larger area. also introducing dust, lint or hair into the layers when separated is almost impossible to avoid.
these pieces, especially the lenticular screen are extremely fragile nylon plastic and is apt to split under its own weight when handling, so beware the project you are about to get involved in...considering the large size.
but it can be done. Remove all screws around the screen frame from the back of TV and the lower sides. There will be a wiring harness that goes to front buttons- disconnect it. The whole assembly will come off the front of the TV. Lay it on the floor face down. Remove the screws in around the inside of the screen. The screens are now ready to lift out, one at a time. IT IS IMPORTANT to not attempt this by yourself. The screen are fragile and large and scratch so easily which appear as a white opaque area when reassembled. Have a helper. Wear cotton gloves while handling as finger prints will be noticeable after you reassemble. ALSO IMPORTANT- these screen are oriented front and back...in other words they go together in a certain direction...on each screen layer there is a small sticker on its outer edge. Make note of its orientation and reassemble accordingly. Clean with a cotton cloth and very very little "plastic glass gleaner" (if needed only!). WIPE EXTREMELY GENTLY in the direction of the grooves on each screen layer- much like cleaning an old vinyl record. The lenticular screen is the biggest worry as rubbing on the grooved side is so likely to cause damage. Perhaps rubbing should be avoided if possible. Let them lay out and dry before reassembling. A bottle of compressed air is good to remove debris when layering them back together...a dust free environment is recommended. Reassembly and installation is just the reverse of dis assembly- remember the wiring harness connector!
WELL YOU MIGHT HAVE TO SEPARATE THE 2 PIECE SCREEN. CAREFULLY TRIMMING THE TAPE ALONG THE EDGES. WIPE WITH A CLEAN CLOTH IN THE DIRECTION OF THE GROVES. UP AND DOWN ON THE FRONT-LENTICULAR LENS. AND IN CONCENTRIC CIRCLES ON THE FRESNEL LENS. TAKING THE SCREEN OFF IS EASY. REMOVE THE SPEAKER GRILL AND YOU WILL SEE THE SCREWS HOLDING IT ON.
Is it the screen itself or the protective screen that is scratched. If
it's the protective screen, then you can just remove that, but be
warned the lenticular screen is now prone to scratches from kids, dogs
or a clumsy significant other. But if you feel comfortable with no one
bumping into it, then you can remove the protective screen and actually
get a better picture quality with no glare.
If it's the actual lenticular screen (one behind the protective screen)
then your in trouble and it will cost a pretty penny to get fixed. You can
switch it out yourself once you buy a new one, but have two people
handy, the instructions on how to replace should be in the owners
manual.
You should be able to make the scratch become invisible using a white eraser. A pink one will work, but the white one works better. Just simply erase the scratch, it may take awhile, but your basically buffing the surface down even again making the scratch un-noticeable.
You must determine whether or not the scratch is on a protective fromt screen or the panel itself. I don't know your specific model, but some of the LGs have a front glass behind which is the actual panel. If that is the case with yours, you can replace the front glass. If it is only the panel, then there is no way to repair other than replacing the panel which is VERY expensive.
If you wish to try something, go to a local auto parts store and purchase a windshield repair kit. This will contain an optically transparent epoxy that can fill in the scratch and make it at least less noticable similar to filling a scratch or crack on a windshield.
By the looks of that picture, it's hard for me to believe that the scratch is not on the outside of the protective plexiglass screen. However, you can remove the protective screen w/o negative effect of the picture. In fact, it will probably reduce the glare from light on the screen. If, in fact, the scratch is still seen w/o the protective screen installed, then it is the lenticular screen that is scratched.
The lenticular screen is the one with the vertical grooves from top to bottom in it. The fresnal is the back screen that appears to have been lathed in a circular pattern.
Projection televisions have 2-3 screens that make up the screen assembly. A fresnel (closest to mirror) and lenticular (closest to viewer) make up the working components. A third screen protector may be on the outer side to protect the inner screens. Try to find out which screens are damaged to know what parts are needed. If it is just the front most, you could remove or replace with simple plexiglass. Always keep screens oriented as found and scratch and dust free (even an eyelash between them will show) for the best picture possible.
Unfortunately, most lcd panels have a polarization filter in the front, this looks like a plastic coating that is actually in front of the glass of the lcd panel, if it's scratched, there is no real way to fix this problem other than replacement.
I replaced the screen on my 62 inch projection TV for about $50 and the the picture quality is good! Have a sheet of plexiglass cut to the EXACT size needed. BEFORE installation it MUST be frosted on both sides by either a fine particle sandblaster or by sanding it VERTICALLY on BOTH sides with a power sander and a fine grade paper.
If this is only an OUTER protective screen and the image is projected on the inner screen then DO NOT frost the replacement screen, just install it.
