Jack, place the flash on the camera.
Then do the following:
1. Load up Canon EOS Utility software
2. Connect camera with USB Cable to computer
3. Turn on camera
4. Click on EOS Utility
5. Click on flash setting
Okay big breath, The Rebel T1i controls the flash (one reason you turn the flash on and off that's it) so you may have simply switched metering modes, with flash you should be on Evaluative mode.
Another thing is the camera may have been programed for TTL in the Menu E-TTL is the "normal" but if it's changed then the changes stays until you change it back.
I think it's the metering mode but if not you need to go into the camera Menu, Flash Control, External Flash, Flash Mode then select E-TTL. I found this all in a PDF manual of the Rebel T1i pages 139 through 141.
There is a button with three arrows pointing to the right on your 580EX. Press this until the 3 arrows appear on your flash LCD. That is second curtain sync.
The other function of that button is for High Speed Sync
What camera that you are having problem with those flashes?
Will switching the two have the same problems.
Make sure it is fully pushed forward into hotshoe & locked:-)
Try shooting second current, this will save you the repair costs.
Your exposure compensation was set to zero, but was your flash compensation set at zero?
when i tilt the flash head on my new 580ex 2 then it lloks like it hasn't contacted propely switches on ttl insted stay on ettl
