80 MLS of 2 stroke oil to one gallon of fuel and it doesn't matter what octane, of course the higher octane is better cause it burns cleaner. To much oil will gum up your carburetor and engine.

In the Mix
All STIHL gasoline-powered equipment uses a 50:1 gasoline/oil mixture. The chart below can help you figure out the correct measurements to use. For high-performance fuel that requires no mixing, choose STIHL MotoMix® premixed fuel.

as long as your fuel mixture is correct, thier is an air fuel mixing screw on the carb locate it adgust it wial it is running u can hear , see and smell the diferance how it is running .check proper plug gap and condition.good luck
Actually both screws are for petrol mix. The screw closest to the engine is the Lo side. Lo side jet provides petrol at idle and during the ramp up to speed. Hi side jet (closest to air filter) only effects the mix at high speed. From McCulloch, these were set at 1 1/4 turns out. Good luck!
If memory serves, Stihl recommends a 50 to 1 mix ratio on the gas mixture...( 2.6 oz oil to 1 gal fuel ) I usually run mine just a smidge richer and run a mix of 45 to 1... ( 2.8 oz oil to 1 gal of fuel ) I also add about 1/2 oz of "Stabil" fuel stabilizer to the mix (holds down gumming of the fuel and keeps things running sweet)...hope this helps... ;-D
