Sometimes the refills will show levels and other times giving warning stating cant be read..should I get Epson cartridges? because even when it was reading them black still wouldn't print and other colors had lines..just don't wanna waste money if that's not gonna help me fix the problem
Refilling can be messy. Some printers will not register ink levels unless they are provided by that company. Using less expensive carts from most resellers will work when NEW. Some carts have a small electronic switch that tells the printer its ok to use, and some remain open and will not talk to the printer even if they are full. The Government filed a suite against printer mfg. to stop them from making their printers utilize proprietary ink carts. Thus you can use any available cartridges you wish. The only problem, the printer may not tell you the ink levels.

Try changing it in the properties section under device settings
or go to color management if you have it and change the setting to black only,.

Essentially Epson should release drivers to resolve this issue. I am not sure there is a exact fix but according to recent US law paased within the last year or so, it is illegal for them to program this into there software. Call the customer relations or email them at

Hello there, I am the Expert that will be helping you today, my name is damnor01. Welcome to Fixya.
Navigate to the Windows control panel and double click printers and faxes.
Now right click on your printer and select properties.
On the bottom right you will see a button that says, Print Test Page, Click it.
The test page will print.
You may need to print a few for the ink to come out.
Try reinstalling the black cartridge, make sure that the contacts are clean. The plastic film/sticker needs to be removed. Check that is is in fact seated and making contact.
Usually it may take up to 24hours for the ink ink in the cartridge to settle.
All the Best!
