Brother xl2600i buttonhole foot sticks in one place

Here are the steps to sew a buttonhole on the Janome New Home My Excel 18W/MW3018 sewing machine:

1. Attach the buttonhole foot to the machine.
2. Place the button in the back of the buttonhole foot and adjust the foot so that the button fits snugly.
3. Select the buttonhole stitch on the machine. It may be a buttonhole symbol or a number corresponding to the buttonhole stitch.
4. Set the stitch length to the desired length for the buttonhole. The machine may have preset lengths or you can adjust it manually.
5. Place the fabric under the foot and lower the foot.
6. Sew the first side of the buttonhole. Stop the machine when it reaches the end of the buttonhole.
7. Sew the second side of the buttonhole, stopping at the end.
8. Use a seam ripper or scissors to open the buttonhole carefully.
9. Remove the fabric from the machine and trim any loose threads.

Make sure to practice on a scrap piece of fabric before sewing the buttonhole on your project.

Thick fabric presents some special problems for buttonholes. It may help to place tissue paper (like giftwrap tissue) under and above the fabric to help the fabric slide better. If not using a special buttonhole foot, a teflon foot or roller foot may also help.



Also, consult your owner's manual. If your machine has a presser foot pressure adjustment, it may help to loosen that so the presser foot does not press so hard on the fabric.

• E1: Make sure the presser foot is lowered before sewing.
  E2: You chose a stitch other than a buttonhole stitch or a bar tack stitch and you tried to sew with the buttonhole lever in the lowered position. Raise the buttonhole lever.
  E3: If you selected the buttonhole or tack bar stitch and start to sew with the buttonhole lever raised, you will get the E3 code. Lower the buttonhole lever.
  E4: You hit the reverse button while the bobbin winder shaft was moved over to the right. Move the bobbin winder shaft to the left.
  E5: On automatic sewing machines, the start/stop button was pressed while the foot controller was plugged in. Unplug the foot controller if you are using the automatic function.
  E6: This code tells you that the motor locked up because the thread is tangled. Untangle the thread, make sure the machine is threaded properly and that the proper tension is set before continuing.
  

Slide the back of the buttonhole foot "R" open, place your button in the cradle and slide the fott together so it holds the button.
Snap on the buttonhole foot on the machine. Pull down the buttonhole lever. It has a small white plastic paddle on the end and is located up and to the left of the needle bar. Pull the lever all the way down. Turn the pattern selector to Buttonhole. Place the tension on 3. Place the stitch width control on 5 or 6. Place the stitch length control a little below 1. Make sure that you have some stabilizer between the layers of fabric. Use freezer paper in a pinch. Lower the foot on your fabric making sure that the foot is not pulled forward or backward. Make a test buttonhole. AFTER EACH BUTTONHOLE YOU MUST TURN THE PATTERN SELECTOR OFF BUTTONHOLE AND BACK ON IN ORDER TO RESET THE MECHANISM. Make several test buttonholes, adjusting the width and length if needed.

Do you just need to attach it to the machine? Or are you having trouble using the foot itself?
It attaches the same way the other feet attach. Remove any foot that may still be attached to the machine. On the buttonhole foot look for the small silver pin that sits on the sliding piece with the small red line marks on it. Lift up your presser foot lever and attach the buttonhole foot's silver pin the same way you would attach any other foot.

As far as using the foot itself place your button on the back sliding piece snuggly till it fits in without falling out, adjust as needed. Pull the bottonhole lever down (it's located on the machine opposite the side of the presser foot lever) so that it rests behind the first lever on the buttonhole foot (small plastic piece raised on the left hand side of the foot that doesn't move). Slide the feed dog switch on the back of your machine so the feed dogs go down. Select your stitch and go. The machine automatically stops when done.

I think E3 means:

Problem: The buttonhole or bar tack stitch was selected and

the foot controller was pressed (or the start/stop button

was pressed if the foot controller is not connected)

while the buttonhole lever is raised.

Solution: Lower the buttonhole lever
before continuing the operation

To the left of the presser foot, there is a plastic button hold guide that must be puled down in order to sew a button hole. Make sure the arm is pulled completely down and placed behind the guide on the foot. There's pictures in the manual, or you can find the manual on-line at brother.com. I hope that helps!
