SOURCE: My PC won't run with ac /dc power!

Hello. There is a hardware failure with the laptop not the AC charger. AC chargers have some range of protections of their own. If the power requirements of the laptop are bigger then what the charger can handle, the charger will turn off. Also other parameters can bring the charger offline. In your case, you have a problem with a small chip, the battery charge controller unit, witch regulates the amount of current required to propperly charge the battery. When this thing fails, the charging requirements for the battery are reported rong and the AC charger is forced to give more power then necesary. This results in disconnection of the AC charger ( an internal fail safe of the AC charger) and the laptop to swich back to battery power. When the laptop is turned off, it can charge the battery because the power requirements are low, having all processor, main board, hard disk etc turned off. Therefore the AC charger can handle the load. However you will need to have it checked by a service center as it is a hardware fault. Both AC charger and laptop needs that check. The charge controll circuit needs to be replaced probably. It will be a somewhat expensive repair. Don't buy any other battery untill you have the laptop checked. For more aditional info please post back. PS. Sorry for my bad english, I am from Romania, it is pretty hard for me to explain tehnical stuff in english.

SOURCE: Won't turn on, but the charge icon blinks 3 times

It has enough juice in the battery to light up the lcd lights but not enough to turn it on. Could be the power supply. Consult a reputable service center and have it checked out. Good luck.

SOURCE: I have a Dell Inspiron 1721 that will not power up

This is a common problem and most often it is the DC jack in the back where you plug in the power supply. Does moving the plug in the jack make any diffrence? Dell motherboards have issues with bad solder joints at the DC jack. I also see people tripping over the power supply cable and it destroys the jack. Jack replacement can be expensive. I do them for $75.00 in Mass. but see people charging as much as $150.00 to do it. The other thing it can be is a bad motherboard. I see many Dell laptops will power up on A/C and Battery but will not charge the battery. Then again we see your problem where it will run on battery charged off another laptop but will not run on A/C or charge the battery. 95% of the time it is the jack. Let us know how you make out. It goes dark, shuts off constantly. Battery meter isn't showing charging.

Unplug the battery and plug in the AC power plug into the laptop;

Does the laptop start up and stay on?

If yes,

Then put the battery in WHILE IT IS ON; See if it starts charging.

If it does not; You have a bad battery and need to replace it.

If it does start charging here's what happend;

Some laptop batteries if they are fully depleted on charge will not let you power up the laptop EVEN IF the power cable is plugged in. In some cases the PC won't turn on at all.

The reason for this is because the battery must have a certain % of charge in order for you to start the PC even IF the power cable is plugged in.

By removing the battery we eliminated the battery as being a cause for this issue; Once the PC is up and running in windows.. LET THE BATTERY CHARGE! You'll want at least 10% charge minimum for the PC to start up.

If however the battery replaced still doesn't hold a charge it's going to be the AC Adapter power cable that's causing the issue.

Best advice start off with the power cable replacement first; This is the cheapest to fix; Otherwise the battery can cost in excess of $50-$150 or more. But universal AC power adapters can be cheap $70 or less which varies depending on laptop.

Laptop dies when unplugged

Panasonic Toughbook PC Laptops usually have
very reliable battery pack. When your unit is plugged-in
but the Power is OFF, you should see an LED light as follows:
RED FLASHING: Means the battery needs replacement.
Orange/Yellow Solid: Means battery is charging.
Solid Green: Means battery is fully charged.
NO Light AT ALL: Means that Battery Pack is missing.

There is also a battery calibration utility on all Panasonic
Toughbook PC's manufactured since 2004. This is a factory
installed software and is only present in factory units.

This software may also be downloaded as a driver from the
Panasonic Toughbook website as follows:

http://pc-dl.panasonic.co.jp/dl/

Check also in the bottom right hand corner under
Windows for the battery Icon. This will indicate if
the battery is charging, present or not present,
and under Windows 7+ will indicate if the battery
needs to be replaced or not.

Good Luck!

When first switched laptop on tonight I was shown a black screen saying that it needed to be connected to a approved Dell power sources. I plugged it in and the icon at bottom of screeen says that it is...

Usually that error means that your laptop's charging circuit is not charging the battery. Either your motherboard has a problem or your battery. Here's a link for your model's service manual: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins1525/en/SM/index.htm

Battery of laptop not charging

If the laptop works when plugged in, the power supply is OK. The battery controller is probably the problem, which would mean replacing the battery.
