Well first of if it cranks slow, make sure the correct battery voltage is being applied. IS the pre-heat function working? If that is not it won't start when cold. Also check oil viscosity is correct. If the pre-heat is working make sure glow plugs are getting warm on each cylinder.

to reset any shutdown code on units 2010 and newer, switch generator to 'off', press 'enter'. this will clear the code, then you can attempt to start by switching to manual.
in extremely cold weather, you may need an engine block heater or lighter weight oil. you can verify that the gas is flowing if you disconnect the main gas line to the injector/carberator, attempt crank, and see whether fuel squirts out or not. if its cold enough to freeze gasoline, it could be cold enough to freeze oil, anyway
first always check the spark gap and maby replace the spark plug just to get this possibility out of the way, if is hard to start it could because it is not getting enough fuel to start COLD or it is getting to much fuel, smell the exhaust for the tell tail signs of un-burnt fuel a good way to check is to have a friend hold a rag over the intake of the carb wile cranking, if it lights up then your not getting enough fuel, maby replace the carborator, also try a snifter of eather/ cold start if it lights right away your not getting enough fuel these are some suggestions, you can also check compression if the compression is to low it will be hard to ignight the recommended fuel charge but run OK when warm
Slower cranking in cold weather is normal due to the oil being thicker and other tolerances being tighter. As long as the engine fires within 3-5 seconds I wouldn't worry about it. If it cranks REAL slow or is excessively slow to start, I'd tune it up (plugs, wires, distributor cap, etc.) and change the oil to the lowest viscosity recommended. Also, I'd have the battery tested and replaced if it shows marginal.
check your ground cables for corrosion or looseness- it starts slow bwcause everything is still cold, after a few seconds of cranking the voltage heats the cables up and makes a better connection... also check your positive cables.
