Very hot alternator after just replacing and a high pitch squeel

This morning my car wouldnt start so we replaced the alternator, after concluding this was the problem. Now the alternator is very hot to the touch and the car is now making a very high pitched squeel. The water pump was recently replaced as well so this is not the culprit.

THE ALTERNATOR CAN GO OUT DUE TO A WEAK OR BAD BATTERY CAUSING IT TO OVERCHARGE TRYING TO KEEP UP WITH DEMAND ON THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. IT WILL HAVE A HIGH PITCH NOISE WHILE CHARGING AT A HIGH RATE AND FINALLY IT TO WILL GO BAD.

HAVE THE BATTERY TESTED AND CHECK THE CHARGE RATE AT THE ALTERNATOR AND AT THE BATTERY.

High-pitched whine upon cranking, suddenly sluggish, smells hot

It sounds like the water pump shaft bearing has frozen up. A hint here, always replace the idler pulley and water pump when you do the belt, they make kits for this and they have all the parts that wear out along with the belt. As long as the engine doesn't get to hot you should be ok.

Battery light comes on when it rains outside.

The surpinetine belt is slipping on the alternator. A high pitch squeal can sometimes also be heard, because rain water is making the worn belt slip. So replace the belt first. Other possibilities are the idler tensioner might be weak, or worst case is the alternator itself. Also check if your battery cable connections are clean and tightened, because the battery may not be getting a proper charge.

My jeep liberty 2005 has a high pitch squeel when I first start it in the am. The squeel later returns when in idle but only periodically.

we call it the fan belt,it is loose enough to cause it to slip(squeel)whenn cold it just needs adjusting.(the 1/2 inch wide belt that drives the alternator).

Mazdaspeed protoge 03 is making that high pitch squeeling noise and i just replaced powersteering belt.also as soon as i turn a/c on it starts squeeling

That means the fanbelt on the alternator is not tight enough or needs to be changed, if the belt on powersteering goes via A/C than it might be too tight on the powersteering pulley.

1989 volvo 740 turbo

Check the tube from the air cleaner to the turbo, plus the intake on the air cleaner. It really sounds like something got sucked into the turbo. Best not run the car until you check it out! If there is a lot of smoke, your turbo is shot! Some can be rebuilt though! The high pitched sound could be your alternator. After you have checked the other things, remove the belt to the alternator, start the car, if the noise is still there, then let us know. OK Frankster016

Power steering pump seems to be dieing on my 2001 hyundai elantra

If it happens mainly when your car is cold, it is a common symptom known as "morning sickness" or "black rack disease". Check your power steering fluid to see if it has become discoloured. If so, try flushing the system and replace the fluid with an approved power steering fluid. If this does not solve the problem, you may need to replace the rack and pinion steering unit.
