The tape lock sensor is bad and needs replaced relatively cheap fix. around $100

Could very well be a bad plug on the mother board. Common problem with these units

Bad tape sensing switch or tape is missing the anti rec tabs.

There is a tiny switch in the mechanism that detects if the erase prevention tab is broken off the cassette. Try another tape to see if it is the tape, otherwise, that switch is probably broken. The tab is located to the right of the orange colored area on the picture. There is one one each side of the tape.

How do you remove tape protected symbol?

Hello Press the PLAY and REWIND keys at the same time the LCD display shows the fast rewind symbol together with an S to indicate that the tape is being erased backward. The erase function continues until either the beginning of tape is reached or another function is selected. if this does not work Send an email to [email protected] or call (800) 644-9525. While holding the 'Erase' button down, press the 'Rewind' or "Fast Forward' button. It will erase the tape while it rewinds or fast forwards.
