Okay so my Dell Inspiron 1480 (which really isn't that old) has been acting up. All of a sudden, my screen started to spaztically shake up and down, except for the top 1/2 inch, which remains perfectly fine. Between the two sections is a horizontal green/grey line. I haven't done anything especially cruel to it in the past few days or anything. PLEASE tell me it's something that doesn't cost money because I, being a teenager, have none. Help?
Sorry, can't tell you "no cost fix".
Either you've got a motherboard-screen cable failure(harsh, but not too bad) or you're
video card is fritzing. The green/grey line usually indicated a line break in a data line of the monitor cable. The fuzzy shaking is an indication that one of the sync signals may also be compromised.
To eliminate the video card as the problem... plug a monitor into the external video port, and see if the error is ghosted there.
If this doesn't work, Dell actually has some pretty good tools for you to use in troubleshooting it for yourself. The troubleshooter page begins here. There is a good video of using dell's built-in-to-laptops LCD screen test utility here.
Hope it helps you.
